PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has signalled the possibility of a cabinet reshuffle in 2025 amid Zanu PF divisions over the extension of his tenure beyond 2028. Mnangagwa who is serving his second and final term has indicated that he will not go beyond his 2028 constitutional mandate. However, factional rifts and political maneuvering have been the order of the day as the “ED2030” slogan has become a point of contention within the ruling party. Critics within Zanu PF argue that the focus on the slogan masks underlying challenges, including corruption, inefficiency, and economic stagnation whilst the ordinary citizens wallow in abject poverty. The reshuffle is viewed as an opportunity for Mnangagwa to consolidate his power by sidelining dissenters. “The reshuffle might not just be about performance. It could be about loyalty to ED’s vision,” a political analyst suggested. Mnangagwa has reshuffled his cabinet multiple times in recent years, often citing the need for efficiency. During his Christmas Day interview with ZBC, Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of performance and accountability among “leaders”. “This is the season to reflect, not just on personal matters, but on professional performance. Those entrusted with leadership must evaluate their contributions to the people of Zimbabwe,” he said. “We must look at that and say this was my team, this is the team that has delivered our vision. Or does it require interrogating it? And are you going forward with that team like you were saying? No, I can’t release it now, I’ll make my statement after January 1, 2025. “This is because, at this moment, everybody is celebrating Christmas. Without me, how shall we? I said don’t go and do what I will be doing. We reflect on how we’ve worked as a team and what weaknesses have I identified, what is necessary for me to strengthen, to execute government work.” While stopping short of naming specific cabinet ministers or portfolios under review, Mnangagwa made it clear that underperformance would not be tolerated. “Zimbabwe deserves a government that works tirelessly for the people. This requires commitment and results from those in leadership,” he added. His remarks have left the political landscape buzzing, with many speculating about which ministers might be affected by the potential shakeup. What's New Wall Street rallied with a strong performance in a holiday-shortened trading session on Tuesday that was led by the technology sector. Why It Matters This seasonal rally, often referred to as the "Santa rally," has historically delivered average gains of 1.3 percent over the final five trading days of the year and the first two of the new year. Analysts say this period often sets a tone for January and the coming year. Despite some December losses that have pared back the year's gains, the stock market is poised to end 2024 on a high note. The S&P 500 remains up 26 percent so far this year and remains within striking distance of its all-time high achieved earlier this month. If the momentum holds, it will mark a banner year for U.S. equities with a record 57 new highs set by the S&P 500 alone. What To Know The S&P 500 climbed 0.8 percent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 273 points, or 0.6 percent. The Nasdaq composite, often seen as a bellwether for tech, rose 1 percent. Semiconductor companies bolstered gains with Broadcom up 2.9 percent and Nvidia—one of the market's most influential players—gaining 0.8 percent. Super Micro Computer surged by 5.8 percent. Tesla emerged as one of the session's biggest winners, jumping 5.1 percent, while Amazon saw a 1.6 percent uptick. Other Sectors Not all sectors shared in the cheer, however. American Airlines edged down 0.1 percent following a brief nationwide grounding of its flights due to a technical glitch. Elsewhere, U.S. Steel rose 1.1 percent, reflecting investor confidence despite ongoing concerns about the potential sale of the company to Japan's Nippon Steel. A standout performer was NeueHealth, which soared nearly 69 percent after the healthcare company announced plans to go private in a deal valued at approximately $1.3 billion. On the bond market, Treasury yields inched higher with the yield on the 10-year note rising to 4.61 percent from 4.59 percent on Monday. What People Are Saying Michael Hartnett, chief investment strategist at BofA Global Research , previously noted that economic optimism, based on expectations for economic growth and other indicators, is now at its highest level since August 2021, another signal that sentiment might be overheated. What Happens Next Wall Street is now gearing up for a short break as markets close early Tuesday and remain shut Wednesday for Christmas. Investors, however, have their eyes on upcoming economic reports, including Thursday's update on unemployment benefits. This article includes reporting from The Associated Press.

Islanders: Patrick Roy apologizes to the fans present at the training session.Matteo Berrettini has played his role to perfection taking the first match of the Davis Cup Finals 6-4, 6-2 against Netherlands' Botic van de Zandschulp to give Italy a 1-0 lead in the tie with a certain Jannik Sinner next up attempting to seal the deal. The main match going into this tie was Berrettini facing Van de Zandschulp due to the variables. The victor has not been at his best this latter part of the season but he has found a way to win on a fast zippy courts that favours his superb serve. Also after having to sit out last year during the Finals and being there to watch sat on the sidelines injured, he will revel being back out there and performing for his country. The variable was that Van de Zandschulp has led by example too this week. He has been the main anchor for the Dutch team reaching the final. But with Tallon Griekspoor next, he has the unenviable task of trying to beat the World No.1 Jannik Sinner who himself has a 5-0 Head to Head lead over the Dutchman. Given the first to two format throughout, it gives little chance for all or nothing ties really especially if one team are stronger than the others and that is the case with Italy. Can Sinner seal it or will Griekspoor spring what would be a pretty seismic shock to send it to doubles? Stranger things have happened but Berrettini has certainly done his bit. He also maintains a perfect record. He has won every match from Fonseca in the early group stage to now and also including doubles. He was dubbed Mr Perfect by the Davis Cup social media and has now helped his country potentially over the line. Also great to see after he has endured so much hardship with injuries. “It feels unbelievable. It feels great to be on court. If you win, it’s obviously better. But being able to be healthy and be here, enjoying this kind of atmosphere is most important for me. Because I missed that. I missed these moments last year. We still have hopefully just one more match to go. But the first step was taken," he said. “I feel like my level never really left. When you’re struggling physically and mentally, it’s not easy to play your best tennis. But I always had the feeling my level was there. I just had to work hard. That’s what I did this year and that’s why I’m playing pretty good right now.” A picture perfect start for Italy Matteo Berrettini serves a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Botic Van De Zandschulp to get Italy a 1-0 lead in the Davis Cup Final. #DavisCup pic.twitter.com/zLtXd5Olpm This article first appeared on TennisUpToDate.com and was syndicated with permission.
Anti-NATO protest in Montreal erupts in fires, smashed windows, arrests, say policeFantasy Football is all about the matchups. Even though you drafted your team with certain hopes and intentions, your weekly lineup decisions shouldn't be determined by the order you picked your players in. You need to check who your players play and make sure you've got the right guys in -- and the wrong guys out. It's too early to be absolutely sure which matchups will be easy and which ones will be tough, but we can take some educated guesses based on healthy personnel, defensive schemes, track records, and key details of offenses. The things we know can help us minimize the impact of the things we don't know. This should lead to better decisions being made. We'll go through every game and highlight the players who aren't obvious starts and sits (because you don't need to be told to start Derrick Henry ). You should feel more comfortable starting or sitting players based on the information given, and feeling comfortable with your Fantasy lineup before the games start is the best feeling in the world. The Grammy winner got emotional as she wandered into the crowd to perform her 2015 hit “When We Were Young” at Caesar’s Palace on Saturday, per a video posted to X. The clip showed the singer stopping in front of her pre-teen and beau to give them hugs and kisses, and fans couldn’t help but gush over the sweet interaction. Another photo posted to social media showed Paul, 43, and Angelo sitting by Adele’s mom, Penny Adkins. The “Someone Like You” songstress shares Angelo with her ex-husband, Simon Konecki, whom she was wed to from 2018 to 2021. Adele, 36, also emotionally addressed the audience and couldn’t hold back her tears while thanking her son, who she is notoriously private about, for his support. “I chose to do a residency so I could keep his life normal,” she said in a video posted to X . “And I did do that and I wouldn’t change it for the world.” “I love you to bits, peanut,” the pop star told Angelo. “Thank you.” Adele then addressed Paul as her “partner” and “fiancé” while showing off her engagement ring. “Thank you for always picking me up and making me feel like I could do whatever I want to do. There have been times when I’m too tired or too emotional and drained [and you say], ‘Come, baby. Get up, baby.’ I appreciate that.” The “Hello” singer revealed that she received “closure” when icon Celine Dion attended her show last month. At the time, the two beloved performers were seen crying and embracing each other. “I cried for a whole week,” Adele said Saturday. “It’s been wonderful and I will miss it terribly,” she continued, admitting she doesn’t know when she will next perform again. “I don’t have any f–king plans,” the “Skyfall” singer quipped, reassuring the crowd that she would be back. Adele has spent the past two years performing in Vegas. In May, she shared that she wanted to have a baby with Paul once she wrapped her residency. The hitmaker revealed that she and the sports agent, who’ve been dating since 2021, were engaged in August. However, Adele has been wearing a massive sparkler on that finger since 2022.

The president welcomed 2,500 guests under sunny skies as he cracked jokes about the fates of “Peach” and “Blossom.” He also sounded wistful tones about the last weeks of his presidency. Separately, first lady Jill Biden received the delivery of the official White House Christmas tree. And the Bidens are traveling to New York later Monday for an early holiday celebration with members of the Coast Guard. The 11th team will be called Cadillac F1 and be run by new Andretti Global majority owners Dan Towriss and Mark Walter. The team will use Ferrari engines its first two years until GM has a Cadillac engine built for competition in time for the 2028 season. Police in the town of Shrewsbury are investigating how a tombstone at the fictional grave of Ebenezer Scrooge was destroyed. The movie prop used in the 1984 adaption of Charles Dickens' “A Christmas Carol” had become a tourist attraction. The film starred George C. Scott as the cold-hearted curmudgeon who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve who show him what will become of his life if he doesn’t become a better person. West Mercia Police say the stone was vandalized in the past week. Megachurch founder T.D. Jakes suffers health incident during sermon at Dallas church DALLAS (AP) — The founder of Dallas-based megachurch The Potter's House, Bishop T.D. Jakes, was hospitalized after suffering what the church called a “slight health incident.” Jakes was speaking to churchgoers after he sat down and began trembling as several people gathered around him Sunday at the church. Jakes' daughter Sarah Jakes Roberts and her husband Touré Roberts said in a statement on social media late Sunday that Jakes was improving. The 67-year-old Jakes founded the non-denominational The Potter's House in 1996 and his website says it now has more than 30,000 members with campuses in Fort Worth and Frisco, Texas; and in Denver. At the crossroads of news and opinion, 'Morning Joe' hosts grapple with aftermath of Trump meeting The reaction of those who defended “Morning Joe” hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski for meeting with President-elect Trump sounds almost quaint in the days of opinionated journalism. Doesn't it makes sense, they said, for hosts of a political news show to meet with such an important figure? But given how “Morning Joe” has attacked Trump, its viewers felt insulted. Many reacted quickly by staying away. It all reflects the broader trend of opinion crowding out traditional journalist in today's marketplace, and the expectations that creates among consumers. By mid-week, the show's audience was less than two-thirds what it has typically been this year. Pilot dies in plane crash in remote woods of New York, puppy found alive WINDHAM, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a pilot and at least one dog he was transporting died when a small plane crashed in the snowy woods of the Catskill Mountains, though a puppy on the flight was found alive with two broken legs. The Greene County sheriff’s office says Seuk Kim of Springfield, Virginia, was flying from Maryland to Albany, New York, when the plane crashed at about 6:10 p.m. Sunday in a remote area. Officials believe the pilot died from the impact. The surviving dog was hospitalized, while a third dog was not located. The flight was connected with a not-for-profit group that transports rescue animals. Warren Buffett gives away another $1.1B and plans for distributing his $147B fortune after his death OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Investor Warren Buffett renewed his Thanksgiving tradition of giving by handing out more than $1.1 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock to four of his family's foundations Monday, and he offered new details about who will be handing out the rest of his fortune after his death. Buffett has said previously that his three kids will distribute his remaining $147.4 billion fortune in the 10 years after his death, but now he has also designated successors for them because it’s possible that Buffett’s children could die before giving it all away. Buffett said he has no regrets about his decision to start giving away his fortune in 2006. A desert oasis outside of Dubai draws a new caravan: A family of rodents from Argentina AL QUDRA LAKES, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A desert oasis hidden away in the dunes in the far reaches of skyscraper-studded Dubai has drawn a surprising new set of weary world travelers: a pack of Argentinian rodents. A number of Patagonian mara, a rabbit-like mammal with long legs, big ears and a body like a hoofed animal, now roam the grounds of Al Qudra Lakes, typically home to gazelle and other desert creatures of the United Arab Emirates. How they got there remains a mystery in the UAE, a country where exotic animals have ended up in the private homes and farms of the wealthy. But the pack appears to be thriving there and likely have survived several years already in a network of warrens among the dunes.
By EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court should overturn Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era practice of removing voting rights from people convicted of certain felonies, including nonviolent crimes such as forgery and timber theft, attorneys say in new court papers. Most of the people affected are disenfranchised for life because the state provides few options for restoring ballot access. “Mississippi’s harsh and unforgiving felony disenfranchisement scheme is a national outlier,” attorneys representing some who lost voting rights said in an appeal filed Wednesday. They wrote that states “have consistently moved away from lifetime felony disenfranchisement over the past few decades.” This case is the second in recent years — and the third since the late 19th century — that asks the Supreme Court to overturn Mississippi’s disenfranchisement for some felonies. The cases use different legal arguments, and the court rejected the most recent attempt in 2023. The new appeal asks justices to reverse a July ruling from the conservative 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which said Mississippi legislators, not the courts, must decide whether to change the laws. Stripping away voting rights for some crimes is unconstitutional because it is cruel and unusual punishment, the appeal argues. A majority of justices rejected arguments over cruel and unusual punishment in June when they cleared the way for cities to enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outside in public places. Attorneys who sued Mississippi over voting rights say the authors of the state’s 1890 constitution based disenfranchisement on a list of crimes they thought Black people were more likely to commit. A majority of the appeals judges wrote that the Supreme Court in 1974 reaffirmed constitutional law allowing states to disenfranchise felons. About 38% of Mississippi residents are Black. Nearly 50,000 people were disenfranchised under the state’s felony voting ban between 1994 and 2017. More than 29,000 of them have completed their sentences, and about 58% of that group are Black, according to an expert who analyzed data for plaintiffs challenging the voting ban. In recent years, legislators have restored voting rights for only a few people. The other recent case that went to the Supreme Court argued that authors of Mississippi’s constitution showed racist intent when they chose which felonies would cause people to lose the right to vote. In that ruling, justices declined to reconsider a 2022 appeals court decision that said Mississippi remedied the discriminatory intent of the original provisions in the state constitution by later altering the list of disenfranchising crimes. In 1950, Mississippi dropped burglary from the list. Murder and rape were added in 1968. The Mississippi attorney general issued an opinion in 2009 that expanded the list to 22 crimes, including timber larceny, carjacking, felony-level shoplifting and felony-level writing bad checks. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote in a 2023 dissent that Mississippi’s list of disenfranchising crimes was “adopted for an illicit discriminatory purpose.”Chanel Maya Banks -- the "Gossip Girl" actress who was reported missing by her family before posting a message to social media explaining she was not in fact missing -- has now filed a restraining order against her mother and cousin. Banks filed for the restraining order Thursday ... claiming her mother, Lutchmin Judy Kumar , and cousin, Danielle Singh , have worked together to destroy her credibility and harass her. In the document, Banks says her mom and cousin have repeatedly tried to make unwanted contact with her ... after she says she told them she wanted distance back in October. She says the pair then called Los Angeles police to report her as a missing person and had officers conduct a wellness check on her. Chanel alleges they wouldn't stop contacting her even though her husband, Carlos , repeatedly told them she was fine and didn't want to speak to them ... and she says she even has text messages of them threatening to "weaponize the police" against her. Then, Banks says, on November 10, her mom and cousin broke into her apartment while she was away on a trip ... allegedly attacking Carlos, stealing his work badge and putting an Apple AirTag on her car to track her movements. She says she filed police reports over the alleged incidents. Banks says her mother and sister then ramped up their attacks on her and her husband ... continuing to accuse him of murder and going as far as claiming Chanel should be put on a 5150 psychiatric hold. Banks is asking the court to stop Lutchmin and Danielle from contacting her -- physically or electronically -- and to stop them from talking about her publicly. As we told you ... Chanel was found alive and uninjured by LAPD in November, shortly after the missing-person report was filed. In a since-deleted Instagram post, Banks explained she went to Texas to be baptized by her favorite pastor. Sources close to the family spoke to TMZ and denied all allegations of wrongdoing ... particularly the claim that anyone ever assaulted Carlos. While Chanel says her mom and cousin caused markings on her husband's body, our sources say he had them before Lutchmin and Danielle went to his apartment. We're told the family has no interest in reestablishing communication with her because of everything Chanel said about her mom and cousin. While our sources think Banks should be more grateful to have family who would come look for her, they're ultimately happy she's safe ... and, they're moving on with their lives.

Cos has taken an impressive journey over its 17 years. Starting as a supplier of low-key, well-designed clothes for your everyday wardrobe, Cos now shows its collections within the schedule of New York Fashion Week . Cos now makes much more than basic cotton tees, boasting a range full of impeccable outerwear and leather goods – often for drastically smaller costs than their luxury counterparts on the catwalk. Cos' output is used to getting high-end comparisons, with The Row, Celine and Our Legacy all sharing similar DNA with the sister brand of high street behemoth, H&M. Silhouette forms the backbone of why Cos is such a popular brand – not shying away from more daring shapes and trending silhouettes. Cos was one of the first high street brands to embrace the resurgence of wider-legged trousers and denim, and it now seems to be building on its well-developed reputation. The Cos Atelier collection, for example, showcases the brand’s ability to offer genuinely luxurious pieces of clothing (such as a £650 shearling-lined leather jacket), alongside its mainstay, affordable collection. Whether you’re needing some foolproof wardrobe essentials, looking to up your knitwear game, or want to invest a bit more money into a jacket this year – and want to go with a brand you’ve been able to trust for a long time – Cos certainly has you covered. And to save you the endless search through its very well-stocked collections, we’ve spent some time pulling together our choices for what Cos has to offer. Of the moment knitwear: Boiled-Cashmere Crew-Neck Cardigan , £200 Effortlessly good overcoat: Double-Faced Wool Coat , £250 A tee to feel good in every day: Oversized Cotton T-Shirt , £20 Normcore shirting that's far from boring: Wide Oversized Cotton Oxford Shirt , £75 The best '90s looking jeans: Rider Wide-Leg Jeans , £95 Modern-day suiting for modern day situations: Relaxed Double-Breasted Wool Blazer , £225 Finishing touches: Ribbed Alpaca-Blend Beanie , £35 One of Cos' most impressive categories is its knitwear – from simple crew neck sweaters to loud, patterned cardigans and polos, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something that wouldn’t fit into your autumn wardrobe. Sleek merino wool gives ample options for smarter-leaning requirements, and fuzzy mohair delivers on Marni-adjacent statements. There’s something for everything in between those ends of the spectrum, too. One thing Cos really has going for it is a focus on sustainable fabrication, and that focus really shines in its knitwear. Organic cotton, recycled fibres and responsibly-sourced wool are utilised all throughout the collection, ensuring that you get a good conscience to go along with your new jumper. If there’s one staple to get right when the weather gets colder, it’s nailing your outerwear choice (or choices, if you really can’t settle on just one). With Cos, you’re kind of spoilt for choice. There’s the usual fare of simple, solid overcoats in versatile colours that can be the hardworking final layer you need in the bleak winter months, along with coat-of-the-moment styles like leather-collared field jackets that can work in a cross-seasonal capacity and bring a bit of elevated workwear to your wardrobe. Then come the big hitters, the leathers, shearlings and punchier overcoats that showcase Cos' ability to really come out swinging with outerwear that competes with luxury brands' output. Any high street brand knows the power of being able to supply shoppers with a version of the ‘ perfect tee ’. A seemingly unending search that has people stepping up to bat for their preferred most essential of essentials. Cos is no different; it has a very good selection of base layers, that are available in a 3-pack for £55, or £18 per tee, which puts them a touch above the price of the Uniqlo Airism Cotton t-shirt, oft-cited as the ‘best tee’. Where Cos excels over its competition is the expanded range of cotton tees and vests it has to offer. Slim fit to oversized, printed or textured, colourful and bold to subtle and versatile, Cos does it all and does it well. The Regular Lightweight Brushed Cotton T-Shirt is a particular highlight, available in 12 colours, it’s hard to see how you could ever need to go elsewhere for your tee needs. Menswear is on a bit of a swing back to a slightly more grown-up attitude. While hoodies ’n’ tees will always have a place in your wardrobe, there is a distinct appetite for the classics these days. Shirting is something that can easily be neglected as a bit stuffy or overly foral, but Cos' prodigious collection is sure to have something that will float your boat. Revamps of classic styles, such as wider-cut oxford shirts and overshirts in a cosier boiled wool fabrication, are a great place to start if you want something a bit more contemporary. More tried and tested smarter styles are available in a slim fitting cotton poplin for those who need something to up their office wear game, and Cos will also, on occasion, deliver a shirt that is tricked out in some way, like having vintage-feeling 1950’s-inspired patch pockets or a drawstring at the waist. Not to mention the wide array of printed styles in short and long sleeves available, so you’re covered no matter the time of year. Is £100 for a pair of jeans expensive? There’s two ways to look at it really – yes, anything over £100 is an investment for most of us, but it's always worth considering how often you’ll need to replace the item in the long run. A bit of upfront cost to get something that will need replacing far less is often a better move than going for a cheaper pair you’ll need to replace time and time again. This approach is definitely worth considering for Cos' denim selection – most of which floats around the £100 mark, and offers any silhouette and wash you could want, really. We’re particular fans of the Dome Straight Leg jeans; they’re a really solid option for the baggier place that menswear finds itself in at the moment, without going overboard – more of a true homage to the silhouettes of the ‘90s. Whether you’re looking for a slimmer pair or want to go all out on the barrel leg or wider shapes, you really are catered for at Cos. A suit can be the most comfortable and flattering thing you can own, if you get the right one. Outside of going down the bespoke route – which gets staggeringly good results, but can be massively cost prohibitive – your best option is to shop ‘off the rack’. A basic suit can be easy to find at most high street shops as, for a lot of us, tailoring forms the backbone of what we have to wear daily. Finding a slightly more interesting or exciting style of suit that won’t cost an arm and leg can be trickier, however. This is where Cos can really be a helpful place to shop. You’ll be able to find suiting that is a touch more playful or trend-driven, such as a double breasted and flared-leg style that looks straight out of Harry Style’s wardrobe ( or Lennon Gallagher's, for that matter ), for sub £400, under the same roof as more traditional options like a regular-fitting twill suit that is perfect for a non-stuffy office wardrobe rotation. Cos runs the gamut in between, too, for weddings, more casual suiting and anything that requires a bit of a sartorial serve. So, you’ve successfully bought a whole new wardrobe of Cos clothes and are feeling good. Great stuff – but do you feel like you’re missing some of the little finishing touches? Don’t feel like you need to look elsewhere just yet, Cos also has your back with any and all accessorising needs. Cashmere scarves? Yep. Elegant small leather goods? Of course. Bags? Absolutely. Like any supplier of good garms, Cos also makes sure to lure you in with some really great everyday accessories that are hard to turn down. The selection of bags on offer is really something to pay attention to, whether you veer more on the nylon cross body bag side of things, or need a ludicrously capacious bag for your commute, the options all fall into a really low-key but well-designed category that is surprisingly affordable. Same goes for Cos' leather goods – a solid array of options that are a great place to look if you’re looking at upgrading from a well-worn wallet.Kate Middleton's body language had changed significantly at the Royal Carols : Together At Christmas service held earlier this month, a body language expert has revealed. Viewers were excited to see the Princess of Wales as she held her yearly Together At Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey , which was held on December 6, following her tough year of health battles and preventative chemotherapy treatment. The royal has only made a few public appearances this year as she focused on her health. Princess Kate's treatment ended up September, with her family rallying behind her in support. On Tuesday evening, viewers watched the pre-recorded service as she stepped out in a gorgeous red coat to watch talented musicians perform while fan-favourite celebrities give a few readings. Body language expert Judi James revealed to the Mirror that her 'body language this year contained a subtle shift in dynamic from the year before'. She said: "Firstly there is the growing lack of any signs of tension, thanks in part to the way her children seem to be becoming increasingly self-sufficient. George is now in charge of his brother's royal rituals and protocol and was seen nudging Louis back in line when he tore past George to greet their host at the Abbey, smoothing his tie as he did so in a way that mirrored his father's own preparational gesture when he is on a meet and greet. "George was quick to show his younger brother the pecking order rules here, while Kate stood behind them, smiling in pride and in possible relief too, seeing how well Louis reacted now his more playful-in-public years are behind him. Kate no longer seemed to be on constant child watch here and that reflected in her body language at times during the service, when she often adopted a more comfortable way of sitting than her usual straight-backed pose and the way she was also seen showing total immersion and absorption rituals as she listened to the service itself." Pointing out another change, Judi explained: "This sense of absorption was the second change in Kate's body language. She had chosen 'Empathy' as the theme for the service and her non-verbal signals defined the word perfectly at times. Kate has always looked caring and sympathetic, but empathy tends to come with experience. "Her illness seems to have added an extra layer of knowledge and that personal experience to her signals. When Michelle Docherty delivered her words about empathy from the pulpit Kate's change of expression, from her smiling hosting role to an expression of reflective understanding and sadness in her eyes as she listened with her chin raised and her head tilted." She added: "The third change came with the body language signals of Kate's new network of affection and support. William sat at one end and the Middletons were there in force, but the pinging signals and expressions from close around Kate came from Charlotte, who shared Kate's pride in Louis by grinning at her mother above Louis's head and who appeared to be eye-checking Kate through the service to offer smiles of support." Fans of Princess Charlotte praised her on social media for 'stealing the show' as she laughed with her brothers Prince George and Prince Louis. Not only did she lend a helping hand to her brother when lighting the candles, but she also joyfully sang along to the carols. "Charlotte also seems to be taking some of the burden of performance off her mother's shoulders too as her responses to the service, like her appreciative, regal smile during the ballet section, made her the new target of royal interest when it came to facial expressions," Judi said of the princess. Judi noticed how Kate's laughter with Princess Zara 'showed her position as mood-relaxer and fun royal' hasn't changed. She noted how Sophie sat beside the royal in 'a position of total support'. Judi said: "The two women's greeting rituals showed yet again how close they are, with each holding the other's upper arm to prolong the greeting as they exchanged eye contact and spoke. "But the new kid on the block in terms of support for Kate seems to be Louis. His glances up at his mum looked more about caring and affection than on previous outings, when he had often been glancing up to be given orders or even small warnings." MONTREAL — Police say they've arrested several people following an anti-NATO protest that included two car fires and left some businesses with smashed windows. Montreal police say they made at least three arrests following a demonstration that began late afternoon Friday. Police say that during the march, smoke bombs were deployed, metal barriers were thrown into the street and windows of businesses and at the convention centre were smashed. Delegates from NATO member states and partner countries are in Montreal this weekend to discuss issues including support for Ukraine, climate change and the future of the alliance. The protest was planned by the groups Divest for Palestine and the Convergence of Anti-Capitalist Struggles, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment Saturday. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly condemned the protests in a Saturday morning post on social media platform X, saying that "rioting is not peaceful protest and has no place in Montreal or anywhere in Canada." "Those who spread hate and antisemitism, use violence, loot and destroy property must be condemned and held accountable," she added. Police spokesperson Manuel Couture says the demonstrators were completely dispersed at around 7 p.m. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 23, 2024.
