Vote for our ticket, they browbeat, or our institutions will come crumbling down. It turned out that intimidation tactic did not play well, with the American people summarily rejecting it at the ballot box. Voters, it seems, don’t like to be lectured at. But part of the reason, too, that contention fell flat is how little credibility many liberal-leaning leaders have on the issue of preserving democratic norms. For instance, Minnesota’s own DFL Sen. Tina Smith is no champion of protecting constitutional and legislative custom, having strongly advocated for eliminating the Senate filibuster , toying with the Electoral College , and packing the Supreme Court to better serve her progressive policies and party. And her views were certainly not unique within the former Democratic majority of the U.S. Senate. It will be tempting for Republicans now in full command of both Capitol Hill and the White House to use Democrats’ past support of reckless tinkering with our legislative process as license to pursue the same. But we should not take the bait. Whataboutism is not responsible governance. The American founders designed our republican form of government to protect political minorities, hold the commander in chief in check and make broad congressional consensus required to pass meaningful reform. While the American people gave the GOP a stout electoral mandate to pursue a substantive conservative agenda, and it should, voters also value the special republican form of government we have in place and do not want it distorted. The Republican-controlled 119th Congress will swear an oath on Jan. 3 to uphold the Constitution of the United States, and it should be faithful to it. That must start with its rejection of an unconstitutional idea floating around President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team that the new commander in chief should maintain the option at the outset of his term to instigate blanket recess appointments of his entire Cabinet in order to bypass the Senate’s advice-and-consent role altogether. Trump won his second term by large margins on promises to reform the way Washington works, and the change agent officers he wishes to appoint to serve in his White House deserve a certain level of deference. But under Article II of the Constitution, the presidential power to appoint principal administrative officials is explicitly conditioned that those nominations receive the “advice and consent of the Senate.” The American people duly elected the 100 members of that body, too, and senators have a duty to see that their constitutional responsibilities in the presidential nomination vetting process are properly fulfilled. As Alexander Hamilton explained in Federalist Paper No. 76, the Senate’s capacity to approve or reject presidential appointments affords “an excellent check upon a spirit of favoritism in the President, and would tend greatly to prevent the appointment of unfit characters.” One of the ingenious features of our republican form of government is that each branch’s authority is limited by the others. The president’s power to fill his Cabinet is not absolute by design. Gutting the Senate’s constitutional role in approving Trump’s nominees would require that the Senate be complicit in it and voluntarily go into recess right after he is sworn in on Jan. 20. Doing so would be a doleful display of submissiveness by a Senate majority leader at a time when Republicans rightly wish to reclaim more of Congress’ powers back from what has become a heavy-handed executive. The new Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune is a serious man, and he should not kneel to this demand should Trump make it. And if he does not, as I suspect will be the case, the new Senate GOP majority will deserve far more credit for protecting congressional norms than its Democratic predecessor, which there is nary an example of it pushing back on President Joe Biden’s many attempts to exercise powers outside the Oval Office’s constitutional limits, such as his bid to bypass Congress and unilaterally forgive hundreds of billions of dollars in higher education debt. Many of Trump’s Cabinet nominees thus far have been excellent. The likes of Marco Rubio for secretary of state, Susie Wiles for White House chief of staff and Elise Stefanik for U.N. ambassador will have no trouble sailing through the confirmation process. Others may face more scrutiny, but being in the president’s Cabinet is a big deal and a tough job interview can be warranted. But if Trump feels certain his selections are dead on arrival at a Senate controlled by his own party, he has picked unwisely and should choose again. To be sure, the U.S. Senate has at times abused its “advice and consent” powers and hijacked well-qualified nominations for political exploitation. The way Senate Democrats treated Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh at their Supreme Court confirmation hearings was a disgrace and brought shame to what is supposed to be the world’s greatest deliberative body. The presidents who nominated these good and decent public servants were right to stick by them. And justice ultimately prevailed. But we must always remember that freedom is a special thing when one takes a broad view of world history. Totalitarianism has been the default form of government for most peoples for most of human existence. Americans have been able to enjoy their liberties for so long not only because of the brave men and women who fought and died for them, but also owing to the brilliant constitutional regime of separation of powers we inherited that intentionally frustrates the unbridled will of any one man or political majority. We would do well not to meddle with that, but instead respect and appreciate it — even when it means the party in power, and even when it is our own, does not get its way on all things. Maintaining American freedom demands it.fishing rods terraria

Now it’s time to review the 75-writer anthology called ‘On Being Jewish Now’With a recession deepening and the 1982 midterm elections approaching, Federal Reserve Chair Paul Volcker was summoned to the Oval Office, where Ronald Reagan was sitting with his chief of staff, James Baker. When Baker said Reagan wanted to give Volcker an “order” about interest rates, the 6-foot-7 central banker immediately stalked silently from the room. He did not take orders. Donald Trump is determined to break institutions to the presidential saddle, so people wonder: Could he fire the head of the Fed? (Probably not. Besides, Chair Jerome H. Powell’s term expires in May 2026.) More interesting questions are: What is the Fed for? And is its “independence” a license for mission creep? John H. Cochrane and Amit Seru of the Hoover Institution think the hyperactive Fed has become too ambitious in its interventions in the economy and social policy. Their proposal is the title of their essay “Ending Bailouts, At Last” in the Journal of Law, Economics and Policy. The problematic behavior is a century old and bipartisan: When large financial institutions are in danger of failing, government bails them out by bailing out their creditors. The 1907 financial crisis led in 1913 to the Federal Reserve Act establishing the Fed, which did not prevent the 1933 bank collapse. This led to deposit insurance and many regulations, which did not prevent Continental Illinois Bank’s 1984 failure, the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s and many other bumps on the road to 2008. “Never again, we say, again and again,” wrote Cochrane and Seru. Bailouts multiply, larger each time, spreading to highly leveraged industrial companies, as in the auto bailout of 2009. “Too leveraged to fail,” they wrote, “might be the summary of our new regime.” Too leveraged is a consequence of interest rates too low for too long, combined with confidence that the bailout culture is forever and unlimited. During the pandemic, the market for Treasury bonds became fragile, so the Fed lent bond dealers money to buy the bonds, “then turned around and bought the Treasurys from the dealers a few days later.” Cochrane and Seru wrote that the Fed almost has an implicit policy of buying “whatever quantity” necessary to prop up corporate bond prices. They noted that the Biden administration’s “paycheck protection” program made “forgivable loans” — Washington-speak for gifts — “to small businesses with 500 or fewer employees to cover their business costs, including mortgage interests, rent, utilities and up to eight weeks’ payroll costs.” It is one thing for the accountable political institutions to do this, quite another for the Fed to lend “on lenient terms to the real economy, not just the financial sector.” Throughout the economy, Cochrane and Seru wrote, leverage has been rewarded: “If you saved and bought a house with cash, if you saved and went to a cheaper college rather than take out a big student loan, or if you repaid that loan promptly, you did not get money.” In today’s permanent central-bank-run credit system, “Borrow. Borrow especially if you are big or part of a big and politically influential class of borrowers. As with student loans, borrow from the government.” You might not have to pay it back. When Silicon Valley Bank accepted many large, uninsured deposits, then got in trouble, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. — the government — guaranteed all deposits. So now, wrote Cochrane and Seru, “effectively markets expect all deposits of any size to be guaranteed going forward, at least during any newsworthy event.” The Congressional Budget Office projects budget deficits of 5% to 8% of gross domestic product forever. And this, Cochrane and Seru correctly believe, is too unrealistic. CBO assumes no crises, recessions, wars, pandemaics or — most laughably — spending increases. But even this optimistic debt path “simply cannot happen.” “We have,” Cochrane and Seru wrote, “once-in-a-century crises every 10 years these days.” “Crisis” has come to mean “the possibility that someone, somewhere might lose money.” And “contagion” now denotes a vague fear that “any ripple anywhere might bring down the financial system.” Societies get what they incentivize. Moral hazards — incentives for perverse, risky behaviors — are now sown throughout American life. Cumulatively, they might break the government before Trump’s eccentric Cabinet nominees can. KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Police arrested a 16-year-old student after he allegedly brought a gun to his high school in Kenosha, the second time in less than a month that someone has apparently tried to bring a firearm into one of the southeastern Wisconsin city's schools. Indian Trail High School and Academy's resource officer learned Monday that a photo of the student with a gun had been posted on social media, police said in a statement Wednesday. The student was located, escorted to an office, arrested and taken to the police department. Investigators later determined that the student had hidden a gun in a “sensitive area," making it difficult for officers to locate the weapon initially. The statement did not elaborate, and a police spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking more details late Wednesday afternoon. The student was in custody at a juvenile detention facility on Wednesday awaiting a court hearing, the statement said. Criminal proceedings involving minors and their outcomes are secret in Wisconsin. Kenosha police arrested a 13-year-old boy on Nov. 7 after he tried to bring what police said were “suspicious bags” into Roosevelt Elementary School. Investigators believe the boy was armed, judging by videos of him brandishing what detectives believe was a rifle and comments he made to other students. The teen fled after school staff members moved to question him. Police arrested him at his home later that afternoon. With a focus on human rights, US policy toward Latin America under Jimmy Carter briefly tempered a long tradition of interventionism in a key sphere of American influence, analysts say. Carter, who died Sunday at the age of 100, defied the furor of US conservatives to negotiate the handover of the Panama Canal to Panamanian control, suspended aid to multiple authoritarian governments in the region, and even attempted to normalize relations with Cuba. Carter's resolve to chart a course toward democracy and diplomacy, however, was severely tested in Central America and Cuba, where he was forced to balance his human rights priorities with pressure from adversaries to combat the spread of communism amid the Cold War standoff with the Soviet Union. "Latin America was fundamental and his global policy was oriented toward human rights, democratic values and multilateral cooperation," political analyst Michael Shifter of the Inter-American Dialogue, a think tank in Washington, told AFP. During his 1977-1981 administration, which was sandwiched between the Republican presidencies of Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, the Democrat sought to take a step back from US alignment with right-wing dictatorships in Latin America. - Panama Canal - An important symbol of Carter's approach was the signing of two treaties in 1977 to officially turn over the Panama Canal in 1999. "Jimmy Carter understood that if he did not return the canal to Panama, the relationship between the United States and Panama could lead to a new crisis in a country where Washington could not afford the luxury of instability," said Luis Guillermo Solis, a political scientist and former president of Costa Rica. Carter called the decision, which was wildly unpopular back home, "the most difficult political challenge I ever had," as he accepted Panama's highest honor in 2016. He also hailed the move as "a notable achievement of moving toward democracy and freedom." On Sunday, Panamanian President Jose Mulino praised Carter for helping his country achieve "full sovereignty." During his term, Carter opted not to support Nicaraguan strongman Anastasio Somoza, who was subsequently overthrown by the leftist Sandinista Front in 1979. But in El Salvador, the American president had to "make a very uncomfortable pact with the government," said Shifter. To prevent communists from taking power, Carter resumed US military assistance for a junta which then became more radical, engaging in civilian massacres and plunging El Salvador into a long civil war. Carter took a critical approach to South American dictatorships in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, suspending arms deliveries and imposing sanctions in some cases. But his efforts "did not achieve any progress in terms of democratization," said Argentine political scientist Rosendo Fraga. - 'Let's go to the ball game' - The American president also tried to normalize relations with Cuba 15 years after the missile crisis. He relaxed sanctions that had been in force since 1962, supported secret talks and enabled limited diplomatic representation in both countries. "With him, for the first time, the possibility of dialogue rather than confrontation as a framework for political relations opened up," Jesus Arboleya, a former Cuban diplomat, told AFP. But in 1980, a mass exodus of 125,000 Cubans to the United States, with Fidel Castro's blessing, created an unexpected crisis. It "hurt Carter politically with the swarm of unexpected immigrants," said Jennifer McCoy, a professor of political science at Georgia State University. Castro continued to support Soviet-backed African governments and even deployed troops against Washington's wishes, finally putting an end to the normalization process. However, more than 20 years later, Carter made a historic visit to Havana as ex-president, at the time becoming the highest-profile American politician to set foot on Cuban soil since 1959. During the 2002 visit, "he made a bold call for the US to lift its embargo, but he also called on Castro to embrace democratic opening," said McCoy, who was part of the US delegation for the trip, during which Castro encouraged Carter to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Cuban All-Star baseball game. "Castro was sitting in the front row and we were afraid he would rise to give a long rebuttal to Carter's speech. But he didn't. He just said, 'Let's go to the ball game.'" Cubans "will remember with gratitude his efforts to improve relations," the island's current leader Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Sunday. In the years following Carter's presidency, Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) would go on to resume a full-frontal confrontation with Cuba. Decades later, Barack Obama (2009-2017) opened a new phase of measured normalization, which Donald Trump (2017-2021) brought to an end. US President Joe Biden promised to review US policy toward Cuba, but hardened his stance after Havana cracked down on anti-government protests in 2021. "Carter showed that engagement and diplomacy are more fruitful than isolation," McCoy said. bur-lp-rd-jb/lbc/mlr/bfm/sst/bbk/nro/acb

Stock Of The Day: Stellantis Faces Uncertainty, But Could Support Trigger A Rally?

Student arrested after allegedly bringing gun into Wisconsin high schoolVIDEO: Who has turned Rivers State to his personal estate? Wike calls out OdiliAfter a recount in House District 57 was finalized earlier this week, Democrat Scott Rosenzweig maintained his lead over incumbent Rep. Marty Malone, R-Pray, ultimately winning with three fewer votes than originally tallied. The initial vote tally had Rosenzweig ahead by 20 votes. After the recount, Malone gained two votes in Park County while Rosenzweig lost one, making the final difference a mere 17 votes. The Gallatin vote counts remained the same. The final vote count was 3,802 to 3,785 in favor of Rosenzweig. House District 57 occupies parts of Gallatin and Park Counties, stretching from east Bozeman, up past Clyde Park and all the way out to Cooke City, but excluding downtown Livingston. The district was redrawn as a part of the once-in-a-decade redistricting process to account for population changes and this was the first time the new district was on the ballot. This was the only recount in the state this cycle and they are for legislative races in Montana. State code stipulates that the state will pay for the recount if the margin of victory is equal to or less than 0.25%. Candidates can request a recount if the margin is between 0.25% and 0.5%, but they have to fund the effort. If the original margin following Election Day was 19 instead of 20 votes, the state would have had to pay, but that singular vote pushed the margin to 0.26%, requiring the candidate to foot the bill. Malone said he has not yet received a final cost for the effort, but believes it will come out to roughly $5,200. He had supporters and other legislators contribute money to help pay for the effort which included hiring an attorney. Both men won in their home counties, but Rosenzweig's lead in Gallatin proved too wide for Malone to overcome. Rosenzweig is a resident of East downtown Bozeman and received roughly 2.5 votes in Gallatin County for Malone's one. Malone, a resident of Pray, received 2,891 votes compared to Rosenzweig's 1,766 in Park County. "I intend to represent everyone who did or did not vote for me or did not vote [at all]," Rosenzweig said following the recount. The Associated Press originally the race the morning after election day for Malone, but later retracted its call. Roughly 99.9% of the race calls AP issued were accurate in 2024. "Accuracy is paramount to everything we do at AP and we regret the error," a spokesperson for the outlet said in an email. This race was always projected to be one of the closest of the cycle, something that Rosenzweig, a former satellite communications executive, told residents while door knocking. Many residents that Rosenzweig spoke to were not aware of the deep purple hue of their home district or that the boundaries had changed. The Democrat, who had a paid staffer from the Montana Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee assigned to his race, said he knocked over 2,000 doors. Residents of Bridger Canyon, the road that connects downtown Bozeman to the Bridger Bowl ski resort, said they had not had any political canvassers come by that cycle, even in a year when . "It's the short strokes," Rosenzweig said between doors on a bright summer evening. "It still actually seems to matter." When Rosenzweig told him he was a Democrat canvassing, one resident said "Cool! Like Baucus," referring to Montana's longest serving Senator, Democrat Max Baucus. Another resident thanked him for showing up. What residents in House District 57 were acutely aware of was skyrocketing property taxes. Rosenzweig said property taxes was the topic he heard about most on the doors. Rosenzweig had a permanent smile plastered across his face, even as he tells voters about his plan to lower their property taxes. "We need to balance things so that property tax homeowners only experience relatively minor increases," Rosenzweig said. He wants to see the Legislature do this by not shifting the tax burden too heavily on any one class of property whether its residential, commercial, agricultural or otherwise. "Everyone should handle a reasonable increase," Rosenzweig added. "What happened last year was not reasonable." He has been assigned to the House appropriations committee. Malone served two terms in the statehouse and was vice chairman of the agriculture committee in the 2023 session. Before that he worked as an MSU extension agent. He blamed his loss on redistricting and late night new voter registration in Gallatin County. "I didn't make the district, I'm just running in it," Rosenzweig said earlier this year. In a year where Democrats lost resoundingly statewide, often by double digit margins, the party hung their hat on some key legislative wins. Rosenzweig's victory in House District 57 is another big win for the party. "As Mr. Tester said, he's gonna go home and farm and I guess I'll go home and ranch," Malone said. How – and When – Donald Trump Will Affect Your Life

What Happened : On Sunday, Biden paid tribute to Carter in a statement on X. He touched on Carter’s extraordinary contributions to the world over six decades, referring to him as a dear friend of the nation and the world. Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian. pic.twitter.com/Ki7Rhbent0 “Today, America and the world lost an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian,” said the president. Biden acknowledged Carter’s compassion and moral clarity, which drove him to work tirelessly in various fields, including disease eradication, peacebuilding, civil rights advancement, promotion of free and fair elections, housing for the homeless, and advocacy for the underprivileged. His efforts brought about global change. See Also: Nikki Haley Blasts DOGE Co-Head Vivek Ramaswamy For His Take On ‘American Culture’ — ‘All You Have To Do Carter’s love for his wife Rosalynn was also highlighted, with their relationship being defined as the epitome of partnership. The statement expressed solace in knowing that the couple is reunited once again. “We will miss them both dearly, but take solace knowing they are reunited once again and will remain forever in our hearts,” said Biden. The Biden family expressed their gratitude to the Carter family and their staff for their service and assured that their legacy would continue. The statement ended with a call to the nation’s youth to learn from Carter’s life of purpose and humility. An official state funeral will be held in Washington D.C. to honor the late James Earl Carter, Jr., the 39th President of the United States, according to Biden’s statement. Separately, President-elect Trump said in a statement on Truth Social that while he “strongly disagreed” with Carter philosophically and politically he realized that Carter “loved and respected” the country and all it stands for. “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed,” said Trump. Trump acknowledged Carter as “very consequential” and said this was the case even after he left office. The incoming president also extended “warmest condolences” on behalf of Melania Trump in his statement. Why It Matters : Carter, born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, was the eldest son of Bessie Lillian Carter and James Earl Carter Sr. Before his political career, he was a peanut farmer and a U.S. Navy lieutenant. He was elected governor of Georgia in 1970 and U.S. president in 1976. Known as the nation’s oldest living president, Carter was a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. His passing at the age of 100 marks the end of an era of dedicated public service and humanitarianism. Trump has been criticized in the past for taking digs at Carter, particularly for making comments about the funeral of former first lady Rosalynn Carter . On another occasion Trump had said Carter “wasn't a great president” but compared with Biden he was one of the “great presidents.” In September, Carter had turned 100 and received a message from Biden in which the sitting president said, “I admire you so darn much.” Photo Courtesy: Shutterstock Did You Know? Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the alleged shooter of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, evaded police law enforcement following the shooting on Dec . 4. As there are many questions surrounding Mangione, one thing that has come up in his social media posts and talk with friends is that he played his share of games, including Among Us , the popular social deduction game that became a sensation during the pandemic, according to a report from NBC News on Tuesday. There is some attempt to connect the alleged assassination with the game that involved players killing each other, however, that connection is a bit silly. Among Us, a cartoon-styled social deduction party game, became popular with streamers and was played by millions worldwide during the COVID lockdown. A fellow student at the University of Pennsylvania told NBC News that Mangione was part of a group that played games together, and one of the games they played was Among Us. The individual found it "ironic" that Mangione was the suspect in the shooting of Brian Thompson considering the content of the game. "I just found it extremely ironic that, you know, we were in this game and there could actually be a true killer among us," Alejandro Romero told NBC News. The official Among Us X account posted on Tuesday what seemed to be a response to the report that simply said, "Um..." um Among Us is a social deduction game where players have to identify imposters before they kill their crewmates on a virtual spaceship. The game supports four to 10 people, with players taking the role of crew members while one or two players play as a parasitic shape-shifting alien that needs to kill and sabotage the actions of the crew. Social deduction games are not new, with some tabletop versions going back to the 1980s . Among Us came out in 2018 with minimal fanfare, but it was around September 2020 when the game garnered a huge following after prominent Twitch streamers began playing the game. On Oct. 20, 2020, US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Ilhan Omar, Democrats from New York and Minnesota, respectively, played the game on stream with prominent Twitch celebs racking up 439,000 concurrent viewers , which was the third-highest single stream of all time for the streaming platform. A month later, a report said the game had more than half a billion users . As people dig through Mangione's past to uncover his possible motivations for the alleged shooting, there have been more glimpses of his gaming habits. In the yearbook for Gilman School, where Mangione was valedictorian, he was named as being the " Best at Pick-up Lines " and mentioned that he played Smash Bros., the Nintendo mascot fighting game, although which version was not specified. He also mentioned the fighting game Tekken and hero shooter Overwatch in another rant, as reported by the Daily Mail . It appears the 26-year-old man simply did the typical activities that most young people did while growing up. Mangione is currently in custody in Pennsylvania after being apprehended by law enforcement on Monday after receiving a tip from a customer at a McDonald's . Has been denied bail by a judge and is waiting to see if he will be extradited to New York where he will face charges for the crime. In his first public words since a five-day search ended with his arrest at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, Mangione emerged from a patrol car shouting about an "insult to the intelligence of the American people" while deputies pushed him inside a courthouse.LNG Energy Group Reiterates Value Proposition and Announces Financing and Process to Review Strategic Initiatives

Donegal, according to Eileen, is a front-runner for productions offering not only amazing locations but experienced crew and top-class facilities. ‘In the Land of Saints and Sinners’ star Liam Neeson on location at the Silver Strand, Malin Beg, Glencolmcille. “The numbers of experienced crew members returning and relocating to Donegal is definitely increasing and with Screen Ireland and the National talent Academies committed to training we are also seeing a strong cohort of new entrants and trainees into the industry. There is also a growing network of talented writers and producers in the region,” Eileen says. She hopes the vibrant creative community will continue to grow. “The important thing now is to keep the productions coming to allow these professionals to live and work in their chosen industry here in Donegal.” We have more releases to look forward to in 2025 including Cry From The Sea filmed in Inishowen, as well as Four Letters of Love, starring Pierce Brosnan which was filmed around Glenveagh. As Eileen points out, “The beauty and ruggedness of Donegal speaks for itself on screen.” “The press and marketing that A-list stars bring when they are filming here is also a great advertising tool for Donegal. During production, projects such as those mentioned have a multiplier effect for the local area. They need accommodation, catering, construction materials & skills, wardrobe and prop requirements, electricians, runners, extras, entertainment are all plugged into the local community for months at a time.” Crá – the new Irish language series filmed on location in Gaoth Dobhair, Donegal. FINDING the perfect Secret Santa present can be a challenge but there are certain items you'll want to avoid. A poll of British adults revealed the festive gifts most people hate, including a popular Christmas buy. The research, carried out by online retailer Northerner , uncovered which Secret Santa gifts people truly hate to receive, And since Secret Santa gift giving is at an all-time high, this information may be useful as you draw up your shopping list. With festive tunes already playing on the radio and Christmas markets packed with people, now is the time to hone in on your buys. And while your little ones outline exactly what they want in a letter to Santa, your co-workers or extended friend group aren't quite so forward. If you're looking for some inspiration on what to get them, we can reveal what not to buy. And what better time than ahead of the Black Friday Sales next week? As Brits continue to feel the pinch on the purse strings, Secret Santa style exchange of gifts is becoming increasingly popular. Research found that the number one most hated Secret Santa gift of all time is socks. According to Northerner, up to 81% of Brits admitted that receiving a pair of socks is a disappointment. A total of 85% of those polled agreed that novelty socks are even worse. A big trend for gifts this year has been "useful gifts" so while a pair of socks might tick that box, the public have spoken - do not purchase socks for your Secret Santa. Other seemingly useful gifts were also rated badly by respondents with items such as shower gel receiving 76% of votes. Mugs also proved to be unpopular at 68% and beers edged them out with 69% of the vote. Stationary, key rings, and cigarettes also featured in the top 10 list. Inappropriate gifts also left a bad taste in Brits mouths with drinking games, naughty calendars, and penis shaped chocolates also receiving poor ratings from respondents. While the Secret Santa tradition has become popular amongst colleagues, this research revealed that 41% of working Brits would like to see the routine banned from the workplace. On the other hand, 63% agreed that a Secret Santa system works well for friendship groups and large families. Saving money was reported as being the biggest benefit, with 71% of people agreeing. “Gift giving can be very stressful, especially if you receive a Secret Santa who you don’t know very well," said Markus Lindblad from Northerner. "It’s interesting to see that some of the most commonly given gifts are actually the most hated by Brits - perhaps the secret to a good gift is creativity. "Hopefully this list is helpful for people searching for inspiration and if you are considering buying someone cigarettes or beers, maybe think twice this year. "Look at some more interesting and healthier alternatives like nicotine replacement products or alcohol-free drinks."

Christopher Nolan’s Next Film Starring Zendaya and Tom Holland Unveiled4th Annual Convocation of KISS Deemed to be University held, watchBy ALANNA DURKIN RICHER WASHINGTON (AP) — One year after the Jan. 6, 2021 , U.S. Capitol attack, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department was committed to holding accountable all perpetrators “at any level” for “the assault on our democracy.” That bold declaration won’t apply to at least one person: Donald Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith’s move on Monday to abandon the federal election interference case against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate classified documents case against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump’s political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Trump’s presidential victory has thrown into question the future of the two state criminal cases against him in New York and Georgia. Trump was supposed to be sentenced on Tuesday after his conviction on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money case , but it’s possible the sentencing could be delayed until after Trump leaves office, and the defense is pushing to dismiss the case altogether. Smith’s team stressed that their decision to abandon the federal cases was not a reflection of the merit of the charges, but an acknowledgement that they could not move forward under longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Trump’s presidential victory set “at odds two fundamental and compelling national interests: On the one hand, the Constitution’s requirement that the President must not be unduly encumbered in fulfilling his weighty responsibilities . . . and on the other hand, the Nation’s commitment to the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote in court papers. The move just weeks after Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris underscores the immense personal stake Trump had in the campaign in which he turned his legal woes into a political rallying cry. Trump accused prosecutors of bringing the charges in a bid to keep him out of the White House, and he promised revenge on his perceived enemies if he won a second term. “If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison,” Vice President-elect JD Vance, wrote in a social media post on Monday. “These prosecutions were always political. Now it’s time to ensure what happened to President Trump never happens in this country again.” After the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters that left more than 100 police officers injured, Republican leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republicans who voted to acquit Trump during his Senate impeachment trial said it was up to the justice system to hold Trump accountable. The Jan. 6 case brought last year in Washington alleged an increasingly desperate criminal conspiracy to subvert the will of voters after Trump’s 2020 loss, accusing Trump of using the angry mob of supporters that attacked the Capitol as “a tool” in his campaign to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence and obstruct the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory. Hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters — many of whom have said they felt called to Washington by Trump — have pleaded guilty or been convicted by juries of federal charges at the same courthouse where Trump was supposed to stand trial last year. As the trial date neared, officials at the courthouse that sits within view of the Capitol were busy making plans for the crush of reporters expected to cover the historic case. But Trump’s argument that he enjoyed absolute immunity from prosecution quickly tied up the case in appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. The high court ruled in July that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution , and sent the case back to the trial court to decide which allegations could move forward. But the case was dismissed before the trial court could get a chance to do so. But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case in July on grounds that Smith was illegally appointed . Smith appealed to the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but abandoned that appeal on Monday. Smith’s team said it would continue its fight in the appeals court to revive charges against Trump’s two co-defendants because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” In New York, jurors spent weeks last spring hearing evidence in a state case alleging a Trump scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex. New York prosecutors recently expressed openness to delaying sentencing until after Trump’s second term, while Trump’s lawyers are fighting to have the conviction dismissed altogether. In Georgia, a trial while Trump is in office seems unlikely in a state case charging him and more than a dozen others with conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. The case has been on hold since an appeals court agreed to review whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she had hired to lead the case. Unrealistic pressure steals childhood: Omar Stresses Need To Protect Youth From ‘Academic Overburden’ Jammu: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today highlighted the immense pressure faced by the younger generation, particularly the unrealistic expectations of achieving academic excellence, which, he believed, steals their childhood and leaves little room for joy. Speaking at Amar Ujala’s Bhavviya Shatra Samman event held at the Convention Center in Jammu, he called for a balanced approach to life, urging students to embrace learning, engage in physical activities, and prioritize reading beyond textbooks. The event, organized to honor meritorious students from high school and intermediate classes, saw participation from Ministers Javed Ahmad Rana and Satish Sharma, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Principal Secretary of School Education, Executive Editor of Amar Ujala Indu Shekhar Pancholi, senior officials, students from various institutions, and their parents. “For us, our time is passing. But life is a continuous journey of learning,” said Omar Abdullah, the chief guest of the event. He emphasized that education is not confined to academic institutions but is also drawn from life’s experiences, urging the youth to learn from others’ mistakes and guidance. He personally handed certificates and medals to the awardees and underscored the importance of resilience. “Nothing in life is permanent—neither bad times nor good times. What truly matters is how we use the present moment. Learn from the past, prepare for the future, and live in the now,” he advised. Touching on societal pressures, Abdullah expressed concern over the extreme academic cut-offs, often exceeding 98%, which, he said, were creating unhealthy expectations. “This unrealistic pressure steals your childhood, something you can never get back. We, the older generation, must ensure we don’t prematurely take away your innocence and joy,” he remarked. The Chief Minister also urged students to find time for playing and outdoor activities, emphasizing its impact on health and academic focus. Encouraging children to inculcate the habit of reading books, he highlighted its role in broadening perspectives and relieving stress. Omar Abdullah did not shy away from pinpointing challenges such as drug addiction among the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. While celebrating the achievements of the awardees, he pointed to the alarming rise in addiction cases. “Addiction is not a habit or a weakness; it is a medically recognized disease. It is only by God’s grace that you have stayed on the right path. But we need your help to save others. If you see someone struggling, encourage them to seek treatment,” he urged. On climate change, the Chief Minister reflected on his childhood memories, contrasting them with the present-day reality of erratic weather patterns. “The world we inherited from our ancestors was far better than the one we’re passing on to you. We have a responsibility to act now, to begin reversing the damage we’ve caused. I hope that when you stand in my place decades from now, you won’t feel the same regret I do,” he said. Concluding his address, Omar Abdullah shared a simple yet powerful lesson: Never give in. “No matter how difficult or dark things may seem, you must persevere,” he advised, sharing examples from his political career to inspire resilience among the students. The event ended on a high note, with the chief minister Omar Abdullah expressing his heartfelt congratulations to the students and their parents for their hard work and achievements, while encouraging them to strive for a balanced, fulfilling life.MUSE Microscopy, Inc. is Entering a New Era of Digital Pathology with the Development of the ...Trump’s lawyers rebuff DA’s idea for upholding his hush money conviction, calling it ‘absurd’

Life-sized nutcrackers clad in red, blue and golden yellow diligently standing watch. A cardboard cutout of wide-eyed Hermey the Elf from the 1964 classic, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Blow-up molds of “Despicable Me” minions. Naperville lawns are as festive as ever this holiday season, boasting displays that give the North Pole a run for its candy canes. Don’t want to miss a moment of yuletide? One Naperville household has a list — yes, they’ve checked it twice — of the must-see merriment around town. Thanks to Deborah Nilles, Kevin Knoth and their daughter Megan, Naperville homes dressed up for the holidays are easy to find through a holly jolly-tailored Google map. A tool of local tidings years in the making, the map is now more than 100 addresses strong. Given that the 2024 iteration has only a few days left before it’s relegated to holiday history books, grab your gloves and your hot cocoa because there’s no time like the present for a winter wonderland stroll. “(There are) dozens and dozens of spectacular, beautiful properties,” Deborah Nilles said. “People with these big hearts that share their love for Christmas and the holidays with the community.” Map-registered displays are, aptly, delineated by way of little gingerbread men symbols. Clicking the sugary icons takes visitors to a small blurb about the menu of local decor, including addresses and pictures. For years, Deborah Nilles, Kevin Knoth and their daughter Megan Knoth have decked out their house at 630 Vicksburg Court for the holidays. Their display is known as “The Believe House.” (Deborah Nilles) This year’s holiday map is an ode to both longstanding inclusions and those that are just starting to move into the spotlight, Nilles said. One burgeoning display, for instance, is the Dog House of Naperville, which says happy howlidays with decorations paying homage to man’s best friend. Located at 408 E. 11th Ave., the Dog House made the Nilles’ holiday map for the first time last year. It was small to start, composed of just a few puppy dog pieces, she said. But for 2024, the Dog House upped the ante and returned with twice the number of canine furnishings. “I’m a sucker for a theme,” Nilles said. There’s also the Scott family’s acclaimed “Swiftmas” house at 1228 Atlas Lane, which for the second year in a row decked their Naperville home in a Taylor Swift-inspired lights display. For the second year in a row, longtime Naperville residents Amy and Brian Scott have decorated their house near Atlas Lane and Tupelo Avenue with a Taylor Swift-inspired holiday lights display. (Tess Kenny/Naperville Sun) And there are the oldies but goodies. Those displays, the ones that have lit up Naperville neighborhoods for decades, are Nilles’ favorites, she said. “My heart belongs to the people that have been doing this for 20, 30, 40 years,” she said. Nilles pointed to the Hennessy family, who convert their lawn at 326 S. Sleight St. into a vintage Christmas display every year. Or the Zavoral family at 2320 Remington Drive, who have a longtime practice of handing out free candy canes to light display viewers. The tradition of it all is something that resonates with Nilles and her family. It’s what inspired them to start compiling a holiday Google map for their neighbors in the first place. In fact, the whole endeavor began with the family establishing a decorating tradition of their own. Nilles, who is originally from Chicago’s North Side but moved to Naperville in the late 1980s, caught the Christmas bug about 15 years ago when the holidays got her family through a difficult time, she said. As they faced “personal struggles,” diving head first into decorating for the season became a way to “cheer us up,” she said. They started with a few key pieces. Chief among them was a large red sign that read, “Believe,” a mainstay adornment that still stands today and earned the family’s display the name, “The Believe House.” Over the years, their display, located at 630 Vicksburg Court, has blossomed into a full-lawn spectacle. The Believe House, pictured here, is a Naperville holiday lights display located at 630 Vicksburg Court. Those behind the display — Deborah Nilles, her husband Kevin Knoth and their daughter Megan Knoth — compile a list of houses across Naperville that also go all-out for the holidays. (Deborah Nilles) Meanwhile, along the way, the family’s decoration fervor started to stretch beyond their own porch with the creation of their local holiday lights map. Born about a decade ago, it was inspired by a similar catalog of local displays that the Naperville Sun used to publish annually, Nilles said. Like their own display, the family’s map — both in breadth and notoriety — has grown in time. Today, a Facebook page for the Believe House is up to 29,000 followers. And by the end of this season, Nilles expects their 2024 online directory to hit about four million views. As for compiling the map, it’s a mutlistep process that ramps up around Thanksgiving each year, she said. It involves Nilles doing a drive-by of previously listed displays as well as putting out a call over social media for new additions. When Nilles’ daughter, now 20 and attending Purdue University, was younger, they used to compose the map together. This year though, with Megan only back from college for a short winter break, Nilles assembled the map with the help of a special guest: her mother-in-law. “That was a treat,” she said. “With my (daughter) and my husband, they’ve seen all this, you know? ... But my mother-in-law was seeing most of (the displays) for the very first time. It was just dynamite. It was almost like seeing it through a child’s eyes. It was fabulous. She loved it. I loved it.” This holiday lights display is located at 357 S. Sleight St. in Naperville. (Deborah Nilles) Other moments that have made this year one for the books are new baubles added to their lawn, Nilles said. Namely, a blow mold of Santa Claus that traveled miles — and state borders — to find a home at the Believe House. That’s right, the display now boasts a Kris Kringle hailing from none other than Florida. The family drove out to the Sunshine state to retrieve the vintage figurine earlier this fall. “We had to go get Santa. We needed to rescue him from Florida,” Nilles quipped. “He was melting.” What hasn’t changed this year is the family’s commitment to imbuing fun with philanthropy. The Believe House is an official Salvation Army Red Kettle location. Since she was little, donating to the Salvation Army around the holidays has been as much a part of her family Christmases as stockings and presents, Nilles said. It was a no-brainer to continue the tradition with the Believe House, she said. Just as it was a no-brainer to draw up a holiday map for her community. “I think it’s worth sharing the love,” she said. “The effort that so many of these homeowners put into creating just these really magical displays around town that help bring a feeling of joy to the community. I know there’s a certain kind of peace that goes with Christmas and for me, going to see Christmas lights really epitomizes that.” tkenny@chicagotribune.com

Daily Post Nigeria Three arrested for murder, conspiracy in Niger State Home News Politics Metro Entertainment Sport Metro Three arrested for murder, conspiracy in Niger State Published on December 13, 2024 By Priscilla Dennis A gruesome discovery has shaken the Maitunbi community in Minna, the Niger State capital, following the arrest of three suspects in connection with the murder of a young woman, Hadiza Umaru. The victim, a resident of Garatu, Bosso, was reported missing on December 1, 2024, prompting a thorough investigation by the Crack Squad Unit. The investigation led to the arrest of Habibu Umaru, the victim’s biological brother, who confessed to deceiving Hadiza and taking her to a herbalist, Aliyu Mallam Taiwe, in Taiwe village near Maitunbi. Taiwe and another suspect, Rabiu Aliyu, were subsequently arrested and confessed to administering a poisonous substance to the victim, purportedly to treat an “evil spirit.” The substance proved fatal, and the victim’s body was buried in a shallow grave. A disturbing twist in the investigation revealed three additional shallow graves in the area, with evidence suggesting the same method of killing was used in those cases. In an interview, Habibu Umaru claimed that his attempt to free his sister from a perceived spiritual problem led him to the herbalist, which ultimately resulted in her death after consuming the poisonous substance. “I took my elder sister to the herbalist to help me check on her, and he told me my sister was not human but an evil spirit. During the treatment, she died,” he revealed. Umaru also admitted that he brought his sister to the herbalist without their parents’ knowledge. They only learnt the shocking truth after the police investigation revealed his involvement in her disappearance and death. Rabiu Aliyu, another suspect, alleged that the victim, believed to be a witch, was brought to be cured of an evil spirit. He confessed to administering the substance that led to her death. “After administering the substance, she lay down on a mat. We noticed she was uncomfortable, with blood coming out of her mouth, urinating, and passing excrement. She later died. We removed her clothes and dug a grave to bury her naked along with her mat, plates, pots, and wrappers,” Aliyu stated. When asked how much they were paid for the act, he disclosed: “We were given the sum of N100,000 by her brother. I got N30,000, while the remaining N70,000 was given to the herbalist.” The herbalist, Taiwe, claimed that the other two shallow graves discovered contained the bodies of a man and a child brought by a student from outside Niger State for treatment. The suspects will face charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide once the investigation is complete. The CPN UML-led government, with support from the largest party, the Nepali Congress, was formed in August with three main objectives: amendment of the constitution for political stability, strengthening governance and reforming the economy. Regarding constitution amendment, no effort has been made so far. Similarly, instead of strengthening governance, it has been weakened further. On the economic front, only an Economic Reform Suggestion Commission (ERSC) has been formed. It seems that the government's economic reforms were not a priority during its honeymoon period. This article analyses the growing economic problems and thereby provide concrete suggestions to improve the economy. Prime Minister Oli after the formation of this government had presented the economic situation as a severe crisis in the parliament. Nevertheless, in the name of addressing it, no concrete reform measures have so far been made except for the formation of the ERSC. The expansionary monetary policy recently announced should have been brought two years ago to address the adverse impact of COVID. It has tried to enhance investment by increasing credit, but due to lack of an investment environment, an excess liquidity crisis has created further problems for the economy. Despite the increase in tourist numbers, tourism expenditure has been disappointing, imports, exports and foreign investment are declining, public debt is reaching a dangerous situation of about 50 per cent of GDP, there are abnormal fluctuations in the capital market, and only about 9 per cent of the capital expenditure has been spent in the first quarter of this FY. Low cooperative activities and problem-oriented microfinance have seriously affected economic activities. The recent loss of about Rs 16 billion (government estimates) and its multiplier effects have further hurt the economy. On the other hand, there are long-term contagious problems, low savings and investment, low consumption, low economic growth, low employment, policy instability, very weak good governance and a discouraged private sector that contributes 80 per cent to the economy. However, instead of solving these problems, more have been added. However, the government claims, without any strong statistical base, that the economy has improved dramatically during the honeymoon period. In fact, neither the economy has been completely restored from the COVID impact nor the economy improved from the previous situation. Still Nepal is not serious to learn from the alarming events of Sri Lanka, Pakistan or Bangladesh. Despite these problems, if the government is sincere about reforms, there is room for improving the economy. Recent positive developments have been observed across several key sectors, including agriculture, energy and tourism. Additionally, the macroeconomic production and supply side indicators have shown encouraging trends, reflecting growth and stability. But the aggregate consumption and demand side seems to be quite depressing due to slackness in investment and consumption. Nevertheless, the economy could improve if the government cut down on its own expenditure and pursued exemplary reforms. Given the critical state of the economy, the approach of the commission formed two months ago appears to be more procedural than proactive. Rather than offering immediate, actionable recommendations for urgent implementation, it seems to be merely presenting its report in a customary manner. In order to move the economy effectively and improve service delivery to the people, the government needs to implement four major tasks without delay. • Steps to keep the economy moving: The government must settle all outstanding dues, estimated at around Rs 90 billion, to the construction industry, milk and sugarcane farmers, as well as for export subsidy and agricultural loan subsidy. In addition, the problems faced by the cooperative victims should be addressed by setting up a separate regulatory body. Similarly, an attractive investment climate must be created by removing all obstacles. 2. Reduction of expenditure and import control: First of all, the federal government itself needs to set up an example by introducing reform actions immediately for one year. The reforms should include withdrawal/reduction of different allowances, secretariat expenses, including some reduction in salary. These cuts should be followed by provincial and local governments. Other expenditure cuts can be made on foreign visits, official parties, meeting allowances of government offices and public enterprises. There should be control on import-oriented current expenditure and ban on import of luxury cars and goods. Once the government sets an example, it will encourage the people to increase investment by reducing their consumption. • Introduction of other reforms include enhancing government services to the public, promoting tourism and information technology (IT), and advancing the development of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Additionally, strengthening revenue collection, improving border administration, and effectively mobilising the growing foreign exchange reserves for development are essential steps to drive sustainable economic growth. 4. Consensus on economic agenda with policy stability. But so far no such consensus has been reached except on political issues. The current government with two major parties should thus reach an all-party consensus on this. This agenda should include a) stability with some reforms in economic liberalisation and privatisation policy; b) rationalisation of increasing social security expenditure; g) about 50 per cent cut in the expenditure as recommended by the Public Expenditure Review Commission; d) setting stringent criteria to increase capital expenditure; e) making trade union law investment-friendly; and e) building reservoir-based national hydro projects. Rutgers (6-5, 3-5) coach Greg Schiano then called for a timeout right before Moczulski’s attempt was wide left and about 15 yards short. After the missed field goal was waved off by the timeout, Illinois coach Bret Bielema sent his offense back on the field. Altmyer hit Bryant on an in cut on the left side at the 22, and he continued across the field and scored untouched in a game that featured three lead changes in the final 3:07. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, cities have with technology, a shift that some localities have . However, through generative AI (GenAI), inauthentic audio can be . This was a challenge Austin officials faced during a Nov. 7 City Council meeting, when an AI-generated comment was submitted during a public comment period. In a to the City Council message board, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson addressed the AI-generated comment days after it occurred, emphasizing the city is actively working to prevent additional instances like this. “What happened was unacceptable, and it also showed a huge flaw in the system that someone could use AI to manipulate — and kind of derail — what public comments should be about,” said Councilmember Zohaib Qadri. Austin offers 10 intervals of up to three minutes each during each City Council meeting for public comment — when members of the public can speak about issues that matter to them. Qadri underlined the importance of keeping this channel of communication open while reserving those spaces for actual constituents. The AI-generated comment identified itself as such at the end, he said, but the increasing sophistication of AI may hinder the identification of the use of such tools in the future. To address these risks, Qadri said the Office of the City Clerk and the city manager are working together to create solutions and best practices that will prevent these situations. “We continually explore options that would further protect the integrity of the registration process without impacting community access,” a city spokesperson said in an email. According to the spokesperson, the city does not share its technology security measures publicly. However, they noted these best practices will not include editing or pre-screening of a speaker’s comments. Qadri said he hopes the city is able to determine who perpetrated this call and prevent the submission of additional AI-generated comments. “Governments, by their very foundation, require transparency and open communication and a level of trust in order to best serve our constituents,” Qadri said, arguing GenAI can “destabilize an already fractured media environment” through its ability to rapidly spread disinformation. The remark’s racist content is not unique to AI-generated comments, Qadri explained, as occasionally people make comments with hateful language toward certain ethnic or religious groups, or the LGBTQ+ community. “I think we as a council should always look to push back,” he said. “We need to do whatever we can, through rhetoric or policy, to push back against hate and to make sure that people really feel that Austin is a safe community.” In February, the City Council approved a to create rules and best practices addressing AI technologies; in response to the resolution, the city issued a highlighting city standards for GenAI. The memorandum underlined that city staff are continually evaluating AI Advisory Committee recommendations in their implementation strategy development.

DETROIT — A Muslim Democrat kicked out of a rally featuring Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris at the Royal Oak Musical Theatre last month sued the entertainment venue Thursday in federal court. The lawsuit by Ahmed Ghanim of Ferndale accuses venue officials of discrimination based on race and religion, denial of public accommodation in violation of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and, intentional infliction of emotional distress. He is seeking an unspecified amount of damages. The lawsuit was filed one month after Ghanim was kicked out of an Oct. 21 rally featuring the Democratic nominee in Royal Oak. The incident unfolded as the Harris campaign strived to make inroads with the Muslim and Arab American community in Michigan amid anger over the Biden administration's support for Israel in its war against Hamas and its campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. "Dr. Ghanim was left humiliated, confused, and distressed by the pretextual reason for his ejection from a public political event," his lawyer, Shereef Akeel, wrote in the lawsuit. "...defendants took this action against Dr. Ghanim because of his religion, race, and/or ethnicity." A lawyer for the theatre did not respond immediately Thursday to a request for comment. Republican Donald Trump won the presidential vote in the cities of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights in the presidential election on his way to winning Michigan after the former president courted voters in Metro Detroit's traditionally Democratic Arab American and Muslim communities. Ghanim, an activist who ran for U.S. House in the 11th District that covers parts of Oakland County, said that he had RSVP'd, cleared security and was sitting in the auditorium at the Royal Oak Musical Theatre responding to emails on his phone when a staffer with the venue approached him and asked him to follow her. At the theater's door, the staffer closed it behind him, and he was asked to leave or told he'd be put in the back of a police car. “I’m going to leave but I want to know why you are kicking me out...," Ghanim said during an encounter that he partially recorded. Ghanim said he questioned a Secret Service officer about why he was being removed, and the response was: "I'm not kicking you out. The venue is kicking you out," according to the lawsuit. "Dr. Ghanim was then informed by authorities present that if he did not leave, he would be arrested," Akeel wrote. A day after the incident, Ghanim said he still had not been provided an explanation for what happened and had heard from no one at the Harris campaign or with the Michigan Democratic Party. He felt targeted because he is Muslim, he said. "They kicked me out without — providing zero reasons provided to me. I didn't have anything. There is no provocation," Ghanim told The Detroit News. "I guess that’s how the Democratic Party deals with Muslims," he added. "They’re not important to them. ... Maybe the Democratic Party doesn't want people like me and my kind in the party." One day after the incident, the Harris campaign said it "regrets" what happened and said "he is welcome at future events." The Harris campaign said it was "swiftly" informed by Emgage Action, a Muslim voter group that had endorsed Harris, about the incident and had looked into it. "Our campaign regrets this action and its impact on Dr. Ghanim and the community, and he is welcome at future events," said Harris campaign Michigan senior adviser Chris Wyant. Ghanim originally is from Egypt and works in medical administration. He ran in the Democratic primary for Congress earlier this year, targeting three-term U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham, calling her a "poster child" for the pro-Israel lobby. Stevens defeated Ghanim by 74 percentage points. ©2024 The Detroit News. Visit detroitnews.com . The Chargers rank 10th in the league against the run, so it will be a challenge for the Falcons to find a way to establish a ground game with Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. A solid running attack would create an opportunity for offensive coordinator Zac Robinson to establish the play-action passes for quarterback Kirk Cousins. The Falcons won the first meeting between the teams, 41-0 in San Diego in 1973. Each team has built its record on success against the soft NFC South. Atlanta is 4-1 against division rivals. Los Angeles is 2-0 against the NFC South this season. The Chargers have a four-game winning streak against the division. ... Atlanta is 0-2 against AFC West teams, following a 22-17 loss to Kansas City and the lopsided loss at Denver. The Falcons will complete their tour of the AFC West with a game at the Las Vegas Raiders on Dec. 16. ... The Falcons are the league's only first-place team with a negative points differential. Atlanta has been outscored 274-244. The loss of Dobbins, who has rushed for eight touchdowns, could put more pressure on QB Justin Hebert and the passing game. Herbert's favorite option has been WR Ladd McConkey, who has four TD receptions among his 49 catches for 698 yards. McConkey, the former University of Georgia standout who was drafted in the second round, could enjoy a productive return to the state against a Falcons defense that ranks only 26th against the pass. It remains stalled at third reading in the House of Commons because of an ongoing privilege debate that has prevented the consideration of bills since late September. While Cowessess doesn't currently have a boil water advisory, Beaudin says people in her community rely on bottled water because they don't trust what comes from their taps. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 5, 2024. David Baxter, The Canadian PressOTTAWA — Cowessess First Nation Chief Erica Beaudin accused Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer of using First Nations drinking water legislation as a political “tactic,” saying she’s disappointed in what transpired in the House of Commons on Thursday. Government legislation known as Bill C-61 recognizes that First Nations have an inherent right to clean drinking water, after amendments by the Indigenous and Northern affairs committee, and commits the government to providing “adequate and sustainable” funding for water services in First Nations. Liberal MP Jaime Battiste asked on Thursday for unanimous consent from members of Parliament to send the First Nations Clean Drinking Water Act to the Senate — but several MPs said no. Scheer, whose riding includes Cowessess, rose immediately afterward with a similar motion that also condemned the Liberal government for inaction, and that was also defeated. While Cowessess is not under a boil water advisory, Beaudin says people in her community rely on bottled water because they don’t trust what comes from their taps. “I’m very disappointed that he used clean drinking water as a tactic in this House in order to say, ‘If you do this, then we will do this,’ where there’s real lives that are being affected,” Beaudin told reporters at a news conference. “We’re not talking about toys, we’re not talking about items that are not essential, but water is essential and you either believe in clean drinking water for everybody or you don’t. And if you do, you do everything you possibly can to work towards that happening.” Beaudin added that she knows Scheer to be “very genuine” in representing the people of his riding and urged him to get the Conservative party to co-operate to get the legislation passed. According to government data, there are 31 long-term boil water advisories on First Nations across the country, and 36 short-term advisories. The situation in the House became heated when Battiste entered the aisle holding a glass of water. Battiste later said he considered throwing it at the Conservative benches after his motion was defeated. “This is about protecting water. In Nova Scotia, they poisoned our water in the Pictou Landing community for generations, if not decades. I had the chief in the audience with some of her councillors, and I feel like I let them down,” said a visibly upset Battiste. Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu blasted the Conservative party’s record on ensuring there is clean water on First Nations, and accused them of ignoring First Nations leadership. “So it’s a bit rich for them to use that moment to exploit First Nations people and their need for water to play politics in the House. It’s appalling,” Hajdu said. Hajdu and Battiste were flanked by several chiefs, including Beaudin, and other First Nations representatives in a press conference following the vote. Originally, they planned to speak about the bill moving on to the Senate. The Assembly of First Nations held a special chiefs assembly in Ottawa this week, and on Tuesday the AFN executive endorsed a resolution to continue advocating for the approval of water legislation. The bill is stalled at third reading in the House of Commons because of an ongoing privilege debate that has taken precedence over nearly all other business since late September. The Conservative party did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Wingstop Announces Additional $500 Million Share Repurchase AuthorizationThere is nothing Taylor Swift does better than a surprise song. And fans at the Nov. 21 Eras Tour concert in Toronto —marking the Grammy winner’s second weekend in the city—were treated to a particularly special mashup of two songs that fans have long believed to be about one of Taylor’s famous exes, Joe Jonas . Indeed, when it came time for the acoustic section of the three-hour long concert, Taylor stepped up to the mic with her guitar in hand to sing “Mr. Perfectly Fine," a song from the vault released in 2021 on Fearless (Taylor’s Version) . Taylor then transitioned to “Better Than Revenge” from Speak Now , teasing the audience with , “Time for a little revenge.” That particular track fans believe to be about Joe’s relationship with Camilla Belle , which began shortly after Taylor and Joe’s months-long romance in 2008. “The story starts when it was hot and it was summer and / I had it all, I had him right there where I wanted him,” Taylor sings in the song’s first verse. “She came along, got him alone, and let’s hear the applause / She took him faster than you can say ‘sabotage.’” But those aren’t the only songs inspired by her relationship with the Jonas Brothers member—"Forever & Always,” “Last Kiss” and “Holy Ground” are also believed to be about the summer romance. After all, getting broken up with in a 27-second phone call isn’t something easily shaken off. Yet, in the many years since the pair parted ways, they’ve long buried the hatchet . As Joe—who was married to Taylor’s BFF Sophie Turner until their Sept. 2023 split—told Armchair Expert host Dax Shepard in May 2023, “I'm cool with Taylor. We're cool." The 35-year-old also expressed his hope that he’s back on the good side of Swifites, too. After all, he knows Taylor’s fans remember it all too well. "I hope to think they like me," he added of Taylor’s loyal fan base. "No one f--ks with the Swifties, you know?" But, as he noted, his and Taylor’s parting is now “many, many years removed." For her part, Taylor, too, has noted she maybe needed to calm down following their split. Because in May 2019, when asked what her most rebellious teenage act was, Taylor told Ellen DeGeneres , "Probably when I, like, put Joe Jonas on blast on your show. That was too much. I was 18. We laugh about it now but that was mouthy." Yet, despite the 15 years separating the drama, fans in Toronto were still thrilled to hear the mashup—if the screaming in videos shared to social can be believed. But the Eras Tour hasn’t always been smooth sailing in the year-and-a-half since Taylor embarked on the epic journey. For all the times the 34-year-old has handled onstage malfunctions like a pro, keep reading. A Tech Issue? She's Ready For It It’s cool—that’s what Taylor Swift basically tells ‘em after experiencing a technical difficulty during her show in Stockholm, Sweden. As seen in a video shared on TikTok , the "Cruel Summer" singer told concertgoers to “talk amongst yourselves” as she dealt with an issue with her mic pack. And when she noticed things still weren’t perfectly fine with the device, she unfastened her blue dress—unveiling underneath the gold bra and black shorts she wears elsewhere in her performance—to figure out what was wrong. After a crew member helped her out, Taylor swiftly tied up her dress and resumed the concert like a pro. Bad Blood With a Boot Call it what you want, but it looks like Taylor experienced a bit of a shoe debacle when the heel of one of her bejeweled boots broke during a concert in Rio de Janeiro. But instead of leaving a blank space as to what she’d do next, Taylor simply tore off the bottom of her footwear and tossed it into a crowd —leaving one lucky fan enchanted by the souvenir. Knowing All Too Well How to Solve the Problem And that’s how it works, that’s how you get back on track after an audio issue. As seen in a video shared on social media , Taylor was singing “Love Story” in Mexico when she had a problem with her earpiece that affected her ability to hear where her band was in the song. Instead of jumping into a getaway car, she headed to her guitarist and was soon able to follow along by apparently watching the chords being played. Never Going Out of Style This night was sparkling, and Taylor wasn't going to let it go because of a broken garter. Fans captured the moment The Tortured Poets Department artist noticed the accessory mishap during her concert in Tampa (sing it all together now) Florida!!! So as she was performing “Anti-Hero," she walked over to her backup singers—who were the heroes of the day and helped her get it back on correctly. The Great War With the Bug To the insect that interrupted her Chicago show: Taylor knew you were trouble when you walked, or rather flew, in her mouth. Still, she played it off and didn’t let it bring down the buzz of the evening. “I swallowed a bug. I’m so sorry,” Taylor told the crowd after she began coughing on stage, per a clip shared on social media . “It’s totally fine. It’s just stupid. Oh, delicious. Oh god, is there any chance that none of you saw that?" Long Live That Piano Predicament When Taylor’s piano started mysteriously acting up during her concert in Foxborough, Mass., she probably thought, I can fix it (no really I can) . But after it kept making noises without her even striking a key, she figured the torrential downpour from her earlier show had caused a problem and she knew she wasn't out of the woods. “This has clearly broken my keyboard,” Taylor said, as seen in a video shared on X . “‘Cause it was like literally underwater. I didn’t know how any of the instruments were working last night. So this is broken. I’m just going to get the guitar.” Long Story Short, Her Mic Cut Out You could hear it in the silence—Taylor trying to get her microphone to work. After it cut out during her Chicago show, the music mogul playfully screamed into the microphone to see if anyone could hear her. And while she could’ve stayed, stayed, stayed upset over the malfunction, a video showed her laughing along and poking fun at the incident as the crowd cheered her on. Stage Problems Not Champagne Problems Betty, I won’t make assumptions about why there was a delay in Taylor’s stage dive during her Tampa show. But we think it’s because the floor opening didn’t appear right away— at least according to this video. Still, the stage eventually parted so Taylor could perform her epic stunt. Fearless Moves After Taylor finished performing “Look What You Made Me Do” at her Cincinnati show, she expected a floor door to open and for a platform to lower her beneath the stage. But after the “Love Story” artist hit her mark and nothing happened, she got tired of waiting, wonderin' if it was ever comin’ around. And because her faith in it was fading, she ran off with her dancers to prepare for the next song. Taylor even joked about it on TikTok after footage of the moment spread on social media—writing alongside a video of the moment, “Still swift af boi.” Enchanting Jokes Taylor once sang she was never good at telling jokes, but the punchline for this one was certainly funny. While experiencing a technical difficulty with her earpiece at an Atlanta show, she filled the time gap with a little cat humor. “A cat walks into a library, and the cat says, 'Um, yes I'll have some tuna fish please,'” Taylor told the audience as seen in a video shared by People . "And the lady at the counter says, 'Sir this is a library.' And the cat says, 'Oh, I'm sorry. [And whispers,] I'll have some tuna fish please.'" Not long after, the earpiece issue was fixed. “I'm so sorry,” she continued. “My ears are back. Just at the perfect time because that was like a dad joke from hell."Target Corp. stock underperforms Thursday when compared to competitors

Is the NORAD Santa tracker safe from a government shutdown?

The ongoing Canada Post strike has reached the three-week mark as the two sides continue to trade proposals through a government-appointed mediator. The work stoppage centres around a variety of issues, including disputes over wages and weekend delivery. Here's a snapshot of the issues underpinning the standoff between the Crown corporation and union. Wage increases The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents 55,000 Canada Post workers, said at the start of the strike that wage increases must be kept in line with inflation, with cost-of-living adjustment payments rolled into the basic wage rate. The union initially called for a cumulative wage hike of 24 per cent over four years. CUPW negotiator Jim Gallant said that figure has moved since the start of negotiations, but declined to comment on the union's latest proposal. "We have just lived through the worst cost of living crisis in a generation," the union's national president Jan Simpson said in a post on Tuesday. Canada Post says it has offered what it calls "competitive" wage increases totalling 11.5 per cent over four years and more paid leave. It notes labour costs rose by $242 million in 2023, or about 6.5 per cent, compared with 2022. The organization declined to comment on Thursday. Weekend delivery One of the main snags in negotiations has been a push to expand delivery to the weekend, but the two sides are at odds over how to staff the expansion. Canada Post has pitched seven-day-a-week delivery as a way to boost revenue and "secure the future of the company" as it struggles to compete with other delivery companies. The Crown corporation says it would staff weekend delivery shifts with a mix of new permanent part-time positions and some full-time, which would "create flexibility while not adding significant long-term fixed costs." But the union characterizes Canada Post's proposals as "attacks on full-time work," accusing the Crown corporation of wanting to increase the part-time mix to more than 50 per cent of the workforce. It says it is concerned some part-timers could be scheduled for as few as eight hours per week and wouldn’t be eligible for benefits until they reach 1,000 hours. "Canada Post has every ability today to deliver parcels on the weekend, inside our collective agreement at straight time," Gallant said in an interview. "We think it can be done with full-timers ... We're just saying, 'Instead of hiring 10 part-timers, you can hire three full time." Job security and retirement The union has highlighted a number of its demands for better job security, including a request for "improved protections against technological change." Gallant said Canada Post is "always looking for new technology" that could threaten workers' duties. "This loading and unloading of trucks by robots is one that they're really, really looking at (and) forklifts that drive themselves through a plant," he said. "We're always afraid." When it comes to retirement, CUPW says Canada Post wants new workers to accept a defined contribution pension plan, even though its defined benefit pension plan is overfunded by 140 per cent. "All workers deserve the right to retire with dignity, and for us, that means postal workers — present and future — maintain their defined benefit pension plan," Simpson said. Canada Post says its proposals are "focused on protecting and enhancing what’s important to current employees ... while protecting the defined benefit pension and their job security." Rural service The union has said it wants job security rights for rural and suburban mail carriers in line with those granted to urban postal workers. It has outlined a number of issues affecting its Rural Suburban Mail Carrier bargaining unit, saying it wants an hourly rate system with appropriate time values, union involvement and "safeguards against (Canada Post's) unilateral change." The union says Canada Post must maximize and maintain eight-hour routes for rural workers, grant improved rights for on-call relief employees, and uphold paid meal and rest period rights. It says the Crown corporation must also ensure the bargaining unit's involvement in service expansion projects. Earlier this week, Simpson called on Canada Post to commit to working with the union "to expand services at the post office including postal banking and electric vehicle charging stations." Safer working conditions The union has demanded the full elimination of Canada Post's "separate sort from delivery" system, which entails certain employees spending the entirety of their shifts sorting mail for letter carriers to go out and deliver — as opposed to carriers performing both tasks. It says this system overburdens carriers, who as a result spend more time outdoors and potentially exposed to extreme weather events. "Postal workers suffer the second highest rate of disabling injury among workers under federal jurisdiction, behind only the road transportation sector," Simpson said. "Growing neighbourhood mail volumes and changing work methods like separate sort-from-delivery are only making things worse." The union has also proposed increases to short-term disability program payments and injury on duty payments, along with more paid medical days. Kev played tracks from "Jungle on the Dance Floor" as the celebrities entered the dance booths. In a twist on musical statues, they needed to strike the correct dance pose and hold for ten seconds. The KPMG report reveals that organisations are extracting the most value from machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI and report the ROI from these technologies is either meeting or exceeding expectations. The research, published in the KPMG global AI in finance report , covered 2,900 organisations across 23 countries and built upon research conducted earlier this year across 1,800 organisations in 10 countries. A maturity framework was created to assess respondents into three AI-readiness groups: 24% of organisations qualify as Leaders, while 58% are middle ground Implementers, and 18% are Beginners. KPMG has also developed an AI maturity benchmarking tool designed to help organisations assess their progress in the AI transformation journey. AI deployment grows, Gen AI a key future priority 71% organisations are using AI to some degree in their financial operations. Currently, 41% of them are using AI to a moderate or large degree – and this is predicted to rise to 83% over the next three years. In just six months since the first wave of research, the spread of AI is already visible. Whereas in April 2024, 40% of organisations in the original 10 countries were using traditional AI in their finance operations to a moderate or large degree, this has increased to 45 percent. The use of Gen AI has also grown. The percentage of companies with no intention to use Gen AI has fallen from 6% to just 1% now. Gen AI has become a top priority for the future, with 95% of leaders and 39% of others expecting to selectively or widely adopt it within financial reporting in the next three years. Adoption everywhere KPMG’s research also underlines the extent to which AI is being utilised around the world. While companies in the US, Germany and Japan are well ahead in AI usage, other major economies, such as Italy and Spain, are behind. The same dichotomy is evident in emerging markets, with China and India ahead in AI usage, and Saudi Arabia and the African countries further behind. Adam Scriven, Head of Finance Transformation, Hong Kong at KPMG China , says: “Building AI capability has become an imperative for CFOs and Finance functions in embracing the digital age. It’s critical to recognise that AI is a capability, and not a technology product. We all have to start the AI journey, learn and build better capabilities. KPMG is helping clients establish the right data and systems, modelling and analytics backbone in order to harness the power of AI. KPMG is also co-creating AI solutions with clients to help build capability and go on the journey together.” Alan Yau, Audit Innovation Leader at KPMG China , says: “AI in financial reporting is transforming the industry with enhanced accuracy, efficiency, and real-time insights. As a mega trend, AI enables predictive analytics and data-driven decisions. Upskilling and retaining talent are crucial in this evolution. Organisations must prioritise continuous learning to equip their workforce with AI skills, fostering innovation and adaptability, in order to drive sustainable growth and maintain a competitive edge in the market.” AI usage opening out across finance Companies are turning to AI in every area of corporate finance. Financial reporting is the most widespread usage area, with nearly two-thirds of companies piloting or using AI for reporting, accounting and financial planning. But other areas are following suit: nearly half of companies are now piloting or using AI for treasury and risk management. This can generate better debt management, cash-flow forecasting, fraud detection, credit risk assessment, and scenario analysis in the treasury and risk management functions. Tax management, however, sits slightly further behind. Less than one-third of companies piloting or using AI in this area, although about half are in the planning stage. Leaders moving ahead Leaders are showing the way, with more than three times as many leaders (87%) as others (27%) using AI in finance to a moderate or large degree. Leaders are moving fast and have on average developed six use cases for AI, almost double the number amongst others. Top areas for usage are research and data analysis (85%), fraud detection and prevention (81%), predictive analysis and planning (78%), and using Gen AI for composing documents and other content (75%). Common barriers that all companies encounter include data security vulnerabilities (57%), limited AI skills and knowledge (53%), gathering consistent data (48%) and costs (45%) – but leaders are better able to navigate these through the steps they have taken. Their chief barriers become more advanced ones, such as integrating AI solutions with existing tools and overcoming any residual staff resistance. Reaping the benefits and achieving ROI As the use of AI in finance grows, the dividends multiply. When starting out, finance teams report two to three benefits. By the time they are leaders, that number is seven. Just as the benefits from AI can rise with its usage, so does the potential return on investment. As a result, a remarkable 57% of leaders say ROI is not just meeting but exceeding their expectations. Even amongst less advanced adopters, nearly one third (29%) report the same. Stanley Sum, Head of Digital Enablement at KPMG China , says: “AI is reshaping the finance function, paving the way for both potential opportunities and challenges. Hence, robust AI governance is not merely conducive to meeting regulatory demands, but it stands as an essential component. KPMG assists its clients in their journey to manage risks, promoting transparency and the ethical usage of AI in governance. By implementing mindful supervision now, we help safeguard the future of finance.” Hashtag: #KPMGChina The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement. 1 2 3 Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee govt's focus on human capital formation through a bottom-up approach is leading to an information technology boom in the state, attracting top companies like Infosys, according to principal chief adviser to the CM, Amit Mitra. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Rising Asia-BCC&I summit on Friday. According to Mitra, 905 new primary schools, 6,095 upper primary schools, 747 secondary schools and 2,096 higher secondary schools had been set up during Banerjee's time in office. Besides, 52 new govt colleges, 543 private colleges and 19 state-aided universities came up during this period. The CM, during the inauguration of the Infosys campus on Wednesday, had said that 45,000 engineers would graduate every year, with a large chunk of them being computer engineers and this would create the backbone of human capital for the IT industry. Mitra pointed out that every dollar spent on human resources result in an addition to GDP of $11. "In the US, 40% of growth is based on human capital," he said According to him, the east constitutes 12.8% of the GDP of the country and this will only increase. "Bengal constitutes 44.3% of the GDP of the east, so once the state grows, the region would grow as well," Mitra added. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eric Bieniemy's return to UCLA lasted only one season. The Bruins let go of Bieniemy on Thursday after fielding one of the nation's worst offenses this season. It didn't take head coach DeShaun Foster long to find a replacement. Indiana quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri will become the new Bruins offensive coordinator, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Bruins had not yet announced the decision. Sunseri spent one season at Indiana after following Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti from James Madison. Cignetti and Sunseri worked together for four seasons, the first three with the Dukes, who made the most successful transition from FCS to FBS in history. Bieniemy was hired as associate head coach and offensive coordinator shortly after Foster was hired as head coach in February. Bieniemy was also on the Bruins staff from 2003-05 as running backs coach. Jason Fletcher, Bieniemy's agent, said in a statement that Bieniemy planned to stay only one season in Westwood and termed it a “mutual parting of the ways.” However, Bieniemy signed a two-year contract at UCLA and did have a retention bonus if he was on staff for the 2025 season. "After interviewing for head coaching jobs last year, he wanted to stay active and busy," Fletcher said. “So, he decided to go help out Deshaun Foster, who is like his little brother, at UCLA as opposed to sitting out a year.” Out of 134 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, UCLA was 117th in total offense (328.8 yards per game), 126th in scoring (18.4 points per game) and had the nation's fifth-worst rushing attack (86.6 yards per game). The Bruins — 5-7 in their first season in the Big Ten after qualifying for a bowl the last three years — were the sixth Power Five team since 2000 that didn't score at least 20 points in their first six games. Players also said early in the season that Bieniemy's scheme was difficult to grasp and that play calls could be too wordy. Bieniemy was a two-time Super Bowl champion offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs but his last two stops have not gone well. He was Washington's offensive coordinator in 2023 but was not retained after Ron Rivera was fired. Bieniemy said in an email to ESPN earlier this year that he was not fired by Washington and that he received NFL offers to coach running backs or be a passing game coordinator. However, when asked during UCLA's spring practice to explain those remarks or what his other job prospects were, he refused to do so. “What I’m going say is this: I’m here coaching at UCLA. All that other stuff, you could go talk to the Commanders. I’ll leave it just like that,” he said. Bieniemy wasn’t retained by new Commanders coach Dan Quinn, who replaced Rivera. Despite his success in Kansas City, Bieniemy hasn’t landed a heading coach job, even though he’s interviewed with more than half of the NFL’s 32 teams. Fletcher said: "The plan was always to return to the NFL in 2025, and he’s looking forward to the opportunities ahead.” Sunseri's immediate priority will be to stem any further losses to the transfer portal. Quarterback Justyn Martin — who was on track to compete for the starting job following the graduation of Ethan Garbers — and running back T.J. Harden have already entered the portal. At Indiana, Sunseri worked closely with Kurtis Rourke, a transfer from Mid-American Conference school Ohio. Rourke went on to have one of the best seasons in Hoosiers history as No. 9 Indiana (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten, No. 9 CFP) broke single-season school records for victories and conference wins and appears set to make its CFP debut in two weeks. Sunseri, like Cignetti, also coached previously at Alabama. Sunseri served as a graduate assistant for the Crimson Tide in 2019 and 2020 after previous stints at Florida State and Tennessee. The 35-year-old Sunseri also spent three seasons with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, winning a Grey Cup title as a rookie in 2013 following his college career at Pittsburgh. The advance by HTS and Turkish -backed rebels in Syria suggests that Turkey is playing its cards before US president-elect Donald Trump takes office , driven by its existential fear of a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria. Turkey had been frustrated with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's repeated refusal to come to the negotiating table and meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan, although both Syrian and Turkish defense and intelligence chiefs have met regularly in Russia. Al-Assad has been negotiating through his ministers while relying on the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Russia for the diplomatic push. Yet, while the finger of blame has been pointed at Turkey, the Israel factor cannot be discounted . Just days before the fall of Aleppo, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened Syria against facilitating aid to Hezbollah - and it is no coincidence that this crisis began shortly after the Lebanon ceasefire was finalized . It was almost timed perfectly to suggest that there has been some sort of nod to the armed groups in Idlib . Some Syrian opposition groups have acknowledged that Israel's ceasefire helped them. Turkish-backed groups went so far as to thank Israel and further said they want good relations with Tel Aviv. A key difference But while many observers assert that Assad is on the ropes, his main backers, Russia and Iran, are already flexing their military and diplomatic muscle - and unlike the previous time Assad was in trouble in 2012, major players in the region, including Saudi Arabia , the UAE , Jordan and Iraq , are publicly backing Syria’s sovereignty . Iraq said it shall help Syria militarily as well. With the exception of Qatar, all Arab ambassadors are back in Damascus - and since the fall of Aleppo, there has been a reaffirmation of support for Syria, marking a key difference from when the conflict was viewed as a civil war. Indeed, as Aleppo was falling, the UAE and US were on the verge of potentially removing sanctions on Syria. Assad must now finally take their advice on rapprochement with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the situation spirals out of control. There has been much talk of increased tensions in the occupied Golan Heights, with Israel violating the 1973 buffer zone as it ordered some army units to move out of the demarcated UN line since 1973, almost as if they anticipated trouble to create a buffer zone like in Lebanon along the Litani river. At the same time, there has been a quiet flurry of diplomatic activity in recent months, from the Italians to the Saudis , placing Assad center-stage for a potential new shakeup in the Levant . A number of EU countries, led by Italy, are calling for a major rethink of ties with Syria, spurred by the need to engage Assad for their own migration and security issues. Erdogan is almost begging Assad for a meeting , and with the UAE already increasing aid to Syria to help displaced Lebanese people, Damascus is set to regain a key role in the region after the dust settles in Beirut and Gaza . Syria has carefully maintained a low profile during Israel's genocidal war on Gaza. Whilst being a key member of the axis of resistance for the last 40 years, Syria has not been averse to talking or doing deals with Israel. It has at numerous times almost solved the issue of Golan, so it knows the balance. US President Donald Trump’s new Arab envoy , Massad Boulos, is a political ally of Assad’s best friend in Lebanon, Suleiman Frangieh, who is one of the key candidates for the presidency. Those who know the history of Lebanon and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) will know just how critical Syria is to the delicate balance of the region’s unorthodox relationships, which are not quite as black and white as they seem. Everything is not simply what faraway DC analysts label as “Shia versus Sunni” . A recent report outlines how, in the lead-up to Iran’s 1979 revolution, Syria refused safe passage to Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to avoid further antagonizing Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Prominent Syrian journalist Ibrahim Hamidi goes further in explaining the nuances of what Syria was trying to achieve in Lebanon and Palestine, as Syrian troops and allies sometimes clashed with Hezbollah to protect their own interests. But the Israelis know that for any final peace with the Palestinian people, there must first be an understanding with Damascus. Similarly, Hamas’s recent U-turn on its relationship with Syria - alongside Israeli support for Syrian armed groups against Assad, and Tel Aviv’s now- famous contention that there would have been no Syrian uprising "if Assad made peace with us" - show how intricately linked the Palestinian file is to Syria’s endgame for Israel. Unconfirmed footage of Al Qaeda cutout HTS terrorists celebrating capturing a Syrian🇸🇾 Army base in Hama Israel, the US, and Turkey have reignited the dirty war on Syria through their terrorist proxies, as Bashar Al-Assad’s forces and allies scramble to put together a... pic.twitter.com/TIoR8YnjeJ To be clear, Syria is under no illusions: half the country has been reduced to rubble . But its strength has never been an all-out powerful military or strategic arms advantage. It is what author David Lesch has called Syria’s ability to punch above its weight . It is Syria’s ability to outlast its opponents and ride out the storm , rather than beating its opponents into submission. Assad, despite Israel’s frequent strikes on Iranian targets in Damascus, has not taken any retaliatory actions that could further raise Israel’s ire. Pivot from Iran to Gulf Similarly, according to Hamidi, who is one of the well-informed Syrian journalists, Syria has clamped down on the activities of Hezbollah and Iran-affiliated militias in the country, with Russian help - leading some analysts to question the viability of Iran-Syria ties. While Iran is not quitting Syria, Damascus has other options, as the UAE and Saudi Arabia are helping Syria with the influx of Lebanese refugees, and the EU views strengthened ties with Damascus as a potential way to mitigate its own migration problems. Perhaps the most important element of Assad’s pivotal role in the current mess is Erdogan’s eagerness to meet him. Assad has so far rejected these overtures, saying it would not be an easy path to reconciliation with Turkey. Erdogan, however, has been pleading with Russia to bring Syria to the table. This rejection appears to have prompted Turkish-backed groups to reshuffle the cards in northern Aleppo . The big "so what" from all of this is that even in Syria’s diminished capacity, after more than a decade of war, almost every month we are seeing more ambassadors and global leaders return to Damascus. They see Assad as the best option not just for Syria, but also to help both the Syrian and Lebanese refugees -who fled Lebanon during the recent war - and to resolve the deadlock of the Lebanese presidency. More than a year ago, France acquiesced to a plan to push Assad’s best friend, Frangieh, as the best candidate for president in Lebanon, against the wishes of other European allies. Amid the reordering of Lebanon, one thing that has stood the test of time is Syria’s ability to remain relevant, despite all the damage it has incurred. While Syria depends on Russia and Iran militarily, its global diplomatic support has increased, from Italy, to Saudi Arabia, to China - and this will eventually decide the future of Syria, and the region.

A digital wallet for farmers in New Zealand developed by and has won a Constellation Research SuperNova Award for its secure data-sharing ecosystem based on verifiable credentials. The Trust Alliance New Zealand (TANZ) Digital Farm Wallet lets farmers store data on farm boundaries and greenhouse gas emissions, along with credentials like their farm ID, and was recognized in the “Digital Safety, Governance, Privacy, and Cybersecurity” category. The development partners say the TANZ Digital Farm Wallet could transform the country’s agriculture industry through decentralized identity, increasing supply chain transparency and allowing farmers and consumers to confirm attributes like organic certification. Each company is also working on applying existing protocols and standards for digital identities and the wallets that hold and present them more broadly. Indicio set out its involvement in developing and supporting the OpenID for Verifiable Credentials (OID4VC) and OpenID for Verifiable Presentations (OID4VP) standards in an article on its website earlier this month. The OpenID protocols are key to making decentralized identity accessible and practical for adoption in the real world, according to . Anonyome Labs co-presented a paper on the use of device hardware security modules (HSMs) by existing digital identity wallets to meet the requirements for EU Digital Identity Wallets at the in Brisbane, Australia in late-November. The paper, presented in collaboration with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), argues that digital identity wallet applications can feasibly support the EUDI Wallet technical (ARF), but with some tradeoffs in terms of algorithmic compatibility, user experience and performance. | | | | | | | | |

Industrial Shredders Market Set to Reach USD 1635.9 Million by 2030, Driven by Expanding Applications and Sustainability Initiatives | Credence Research Inc.

Bitcoin has been dealing with a lot of uncertainty during the second and third quarters of 2024, but the general market sentiment remained positive. The most recent shows that investors weren’t wrong to remain optimistic, as BTC just rallied considerably, reaching $99K. During times like this, it is more difficult to determine the direction the marketplace will take, an already challenging task to perform in a market known for its volatility and fluctuations. As a result, investors are likely to have an even harder time coming up with comprehensive strategies that can ensure profitability. As always, your best bet is to do your research so that you can learn more about the latest developments in the marketplace, as well as have a look at historical data patterns. You mustn’t let yourself be swayed by the fear of missing out since it will most definitely do you much more harm than good and cause you to lose large amounts of capital for nothing. Bitcoin was originally designed to have the same properties and use cases as fiat currencies, only in digital format. However, that plan didn’t become a reality, and right now, Bitcoin is considered more of a store of value than anything else. This is precisely why so many investors are bringing Bitcoin to their portfolios since the king of crypto helps with both asset diversification and value retention. However, there has been a lot of discourse within the community regarding the ability to spend cryptocurrencies the same way as other coins. A service that allows this to happen could be one of the first steps Bitcoin takes into the mainstream, attracting a growing number of potential investors that will bring more engagement on the blockchain. Recently, Mastercard has joined forces with a global payments ecosystem known for building and harmonizing solutions that can host both crypto and traditional currencies. Analysts have long debated the possibility of connecting these two financial worlds, and while naysayers definitely do exist, the number of those who believe both ecosystems would have a lot to gain from the interaction is much larger. Mastercard decided to expand support for non-custodial crypto wallets and enable a new euro-denominated debit card that will allow users to spend Bitcoin at more than 100 million merchants that are part of the Mastercard network. Self-custody is a fundamental concept of the crypto environment. It refers to storing assets in a manner that doesn’t depend on the use of a centralized platform or institution, such as a bank. This is one of the key features that attracted investors to this ecosystem in the first place since many are drawn by the anonymity the blockchain is able to offer, as well as the inherent security associated with it. Unlike custodial wallets, the self-custodial variety needs the user to take full responsibility for their funds. You become the only owner of the private key that lets you access the wallet and your funds. As a result, losing or forgetting this password means that you won’t be able to access your capital. Sharing the code with anyone else can also be a security risk since many crypto investors fall prey to scams in which malicious individuals manage to earn their trust and extract this information from them. Afterward, their accounts would be left entirely drained. So, why does an established credit card company want to work with custodial wallets? The general consensus is that traditional and digital finance have nothing to do with one another and that blending them together cannot end well. However, some analysts consider the movement to be perfectly natural and the logical progression Bitcoin was bound to make toward becoming a payment option. The fact that cryptocurrencies are slowly entering the mainstream is also essential to remember. While they are still relatively new assets, they have been considered a niche class for the majority of time. The technology surrounding cryptocurrencies can indeed be quite intimidating for those who are not familiar with it. According to a social media post made by the company, the project will enable users to spend their coins while also addressing the complexities that come with buying and selling cyber coins through the means of a centralized exchange. Exchange-traded funds have been widely discussed ever since before their launch. The reason for the hype surrounding them is their potential to drive significant price action. In Bitcoin’s case, the predictions came true, and the coin managed to beat its previous all-time high. The reason for the price rally is the potential ETFs have to bring more investors to the ecosystem, something that will drive engagement levels and naturally result in a marketplace that is more active. But compared to their United States counterparts, the Hong Kong bitcoin ETFs had a much slower start. During the last week of August, the three spot exchange-traded funds based on Bitcoin in Hong Kong had net inflows of around 247 BTC, meaning that the total holdings are currently around $4,450 BTC. That brings the total AUM for the ETFs and HK $2.1 billion, or $269 million. The gains are excellent news for the ecosystem, given that the Hong Kong assets underperformed significantly compared to their counterparts in the United States. During the launch on April 30th, they attracted $262 million in inflows during the first seven days. However, a majority of that number was subscribed before the listings went live. As such, the actual asset inflows were a much smaller $14 million. This is a sizable contrast when compared to the billions that went into the US Bitcoin ETFs when they were launched in January. Hong Kong has been looking forward to establishing itself as a global hub for crypto investments and trading, and these events have been a setback, showing that the market still has some catching up to do. When you’re an investor, you need to find the best ways to establish your strategy. Do your research and keep your goals in mind, as these are the main factors that should influence your decisions.Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD) Price Target Raised to $51.00

DALLAS (AP) — More than 60 years after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated , conspiracy theories still swirl and any new glimpse into the fateful day of Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas continues to fascinate . President-elect Donald Trump promised during his reelection campaign that he would declassify all of the remaining government records surrounding the assassination if he returned to office. He made a similar pledge during his first term, but ultimately bended to appeals from the CIA and FBI to keep some documents withheld. At this point, only a few thousand of the millions of governmental records related to the assassination have yet to be fully released, and those who have studied the records released so far say that even if the remaining files are declassified, the public shouldn't anticipate any earth-shattering revelations. “Anybody waiting for a smoking gun that’s going to turn this case upside down will be sorely disappointed,” said Gerald Posner, author of “Case Closed,” which concludes that assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Friday's 61st anniversary is expected to be marked with a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy's motorcade was passing through when he was fatally shot. And throughout this week there have been events marking the anniversary. When Air Force One carrying Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy touched down in Dallas , they were greeted by a clear sky and enthusiastic crowds. With a reelection campaign on the horizon the next year, they had gone to Texas on political fence-mending trip. But as the motorcade was finishing its parade route downtown, shots rang out from the Texas School Book Depository building. Police arrested 24-year-old Oswald and, two days later, nightclub owner Jack Ruby fatally shot Oswald during a jail transfer. A year after the assassination, the Warren Commission, which President Lyndon B. Johnson established to investigate the assassination, concluded that Oswald acted alone and there was no evidence of a conspiracy. But that hasn't quelled a web of alternative theories over the decades. In the early 1990s, the federal government mandated that all assassination-related documents be housed in a single collection in the National Archives and Records Administration. The collection of over 5 million records was required to be opened by 2017, barring any exemptions designated by the president. Trump, who took office for his first term in 2017, had boasted that he'd allow the release of all of the remaining records but ended up holding some back because of what he called the potential harm to national security. And while files have continued to be released during President Joe Biden's administration, some still remain unseen. The documents released over the last few years offer details on the way intelligence services operated at the time, and include CIA cables and memos discussing visits by Oswald to the Soviet and Cuban embassies during a trip to Mexico City just weeks before the assassination. The former Marine had previously defected to the Soviet Union before returning home to Texas. Mark S. Zaid, a national security attorney in Washington, said what's been released so far has contributed to the understanding of the time period, giving “a great picture” of what was happening during the Cold War and the activities of the CIA. Posner estimates that there are still about 3,000 to 4,000 documents in the collection that haven’t yet been fully released. Of those documents, some are still completely redacted while others just have small redactions, like someone's Social Security number. There are about 500 documents where all the information is redacted, Posner said, and those include Oswald's and Ruby’s tax returns. “If you have been following it, as I have and others have, you sort of are zeroed in on the pages you think might provide some additional information for history,” Posner said. Trump's transition team hasn’t responded to questions this week about his plans when he takes office. From the start, there were those who believed there had to be more to the story than just Oswald acting alone, said Stephen Fagin, curator of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, which tells the story of the assassination from the building where Oswald made his sniper's perch. “People want to make sense of this and they want to find the solution that fits the crime," said Fagin, who said that while there are lingering questions, law enforcement made “a pretty compelling case” against Oswald. Larry J. Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said his interest in the assassination dates back to the event itself, when he was a child. “It just seemed so fantastical that one very disturbed individual could end up pulling off the crime of the century," Sabato said. “But the more I studied it, the more I realized that is a very possible, maybe even probable in my view, hypothesis.”

The Cowboys' season spiraled out of control in recent weeks, but an upset win over the Commanders on Sunday breathed some life back into a struggling locker room. Are the playoffs still on the table? Dallas is just days away from a Thanksgiving matchup with the flailing Giants, who fell to 2-9 with a listless loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday. Mike McCarthy's team has a chance to build some momentum, but the question is whether it's too late to mean anything. The Cowboys have already exceeded their total number of losses from last season, but Jerry Jones has shied away from major changes in hopes the group can coalesce even with QB Dak Prescott out for the season — and it might be starting to pay dividends. Here's a look at where the Cowboys stand in the NFC playoff picture after their win over the Commanders. The standings will tell you the path to the playoffs isn't as simple as catching Washington, though. The Cowboys have six more teams between them and the Commanders, and they only play one of them again this season. That means Dallas merely staying in contention is going to require some help. No team has earned a wild-card spot with a losing record since the format expanded to seven playoff teams in each conference, so the Cowboys are highly unlikely to reach the playoffs if they lose two more games. Even then, they would still have a difficult path if they even lost one game the rest of the way. NFC East standings Standings through early window of games on Nov. 24. Two Queens residents allegedly responsible for dealing $2 million in stolen retail goods were busted in a crackdown that Gov. Kathy Hochul and Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Tuesday. The bust occurred just days before the biggest shopping day of the holiday season, Black Friday — something that officials drove home during the presser at the Queens DA’s office on Nov. 26. Standing before a large table overflowing with stolen perfume, t-shirts, makeup, and even portions of 3D printed guns, Hochul and Katz stressed that the arrests would help safeguard retailers from theft and protect buyers from potential gouging. Hochul herself didn’t mince words about criminal elements benefiting from businesses’ financial losses. “We’ve had enough with criminals preying on our citizens. We are sick and tired of our citizens feeling they’re vulnerable, whether it’s random crimes on the streets or whether it’s the sophisticated organized crime rates — we are coming after you,” Hochul said. “I saw enough videos of people behind the counter being assaulted in brazen attacks, sometimes in broad daylight, and they’re so vulnerable, especially if they are the only person in the store or in a gas station when it happens.” Prosecutors said husband-and-wife duo Yvelisse Guzman Batista and Cristopher Guzman allegedly operated the sophisticated operation. The two suspects, both residents of Kew Gardens Hills, allegedly worked alongside accomplices Johanny Almonte Reyes and Rosa Rodriguez Santana in directing a horde of shoplifting crews, also known as boosters, to steal large quantities of merchandise from storefronts. Batista and Guzman then allegedly sold the hot merchandise from their home, online, and out of a brick-and-mortar store in the Dominican Republic, prosecutors noted. The duo, authorities said, even allegedly resorted to bribing truck drivers to divert products bound for retailers such as Sephora and Ulta Beauty from manufacturer warehouses directly to locations under their control. Police cracked down on the illegal business through an operation Katz dubbed “Fashionably Fencing.” Undercover operatives made controlled purchases of merchandise from the suspects after contacting them via social media. According to the D.A’s office, the undercover gained access to the Guzmans’ basement, which was set up as a retail store with shelves of stolen merchandise. Upon their arrests, law enforcement agents found more than $1 million in products in Batista’s and Guzman’s possession. They were charged with fostering the sale of stolen goods, the first time this newly adopted crime has been charged in New York. “This investigation and these arrests are about holding the defendants accountable and are also a great opportunity to warn people to be extremely careful when it comes to their purchases especially approaching the holiday season,” Katz said. “This marks the first time in New York anyone has been charged for the crime of fostering the sale of stolen goods, a new measure passed by the legislature and signed into law by Governor Hochul to stop the sale of stolen goods through both online platforms and brick-and-mortar locations.” Katz lauded recent laws that Hochul signed that helped police recover $40 million in stolen goods and led to the creation of dedicated Retail Theft Teams within the New York State Police, whose undercover units participated in the investigation leading to this indictment. “Retail theft not only financially impacts a business, but also presents peril to business owners, retail workers and patrons,” New York State Police Superintendent Steven James said. “State Police remains fully engaged on this issue and will not tolerate the actions of individuals responsible for stealing tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise, victimizing both retailers and the public.” Katz dubbed the takedown operation “Fashionably Fencing,” which also saw undercover operatives make controlled purchases of merchandise from the Guzmans after contacting them via social media. The bird is expected to gradually become weaker and die of hunger within three to five days. RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian veterinarians are running against the clock to find and save a heron spotted with a plastic cup struck in its throat in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as they estimate the animal could die within five days if the object is not removed. Dr Jeferson Pires, a veterinary and biologist working at the center for wild animals at Estacio college, first spotted the bird earlier this week among riparian vegetation in the west side of Rio de Janeiro, and shared its situation on his social media platforms. "Although we frequently find the presence of plastic inside the stomachs of animals, we have never caught a case like this," he told Reuters on Dec 4, stressing the large size of the plastic - apparently a 200mm cup of a popular guarana drink. The heron will not be able to eat with an object that big horizontally placed at its throat, and is expected to gradually become weaker and die of hunger within three to five days, he added. "Human beings still have not realised that we need nature, but nature does not need us to live," environmentalist Isabelle de Loys said, adding the environmental situation in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil is getting worse. The veterinarians' plan to save the heron, identified as a Cocoi heron (Ardea cocoi) - the largest species of herons in Latin America that is closely related to the great blue heron - is to capture the bird once it is too weak to fly away, and then proceed with a surgery to remove the plastic cup, according to Pires. In order to save the animal, first veterinarians will need to locate the heron at the right time, and capture the bird which is about 1.25m tall and has a wingspan of some 1.8m, he added. The adoption of technology, especially digitalization of public offering and right issue encourages participation of the youths in the market Although the economic challenges in the country persisted during the year, the market recorded growth trend. Capital operators said the problem of high inflation, insecurity, depreciating exchange rate, increase in pump price of petrol and the introduction of a windfall tax that affected sectoral performances, impacted on the market activities during the year. But despite all the challenges the nation’s capital market showed impressive growth within the year, outpacing most African peers in year to Date (YTD) performance. According to Managing Director of Arthur Stephens Management Limited,Mr Olatunde Amolegbe the Nigerian capital market is a key driver of economic growth, offering a platform for mobilizing capital, facilitating investments, and fostering wealth creation. He said that in 2024, the market experienced notable developments shaped by regulatory changes, technological adoption, and macroeconomic factors as 2025 beckons, understanding the successes, challenges, and emerging opportunities is essential for unlocking its full potential. This growth was driven by robust earnings from blue-chip companies and supportive government policies. In his paper titled, “Unlocking the Potential of the Nigerian Capital Market: Challenges and Opportunities contribution, he said “The Nigerian equity market saw a significant 39.84 per cent growth in first quarter 2024, rising from 74,773.77 to 104,562.06. The Chechen leader made the allegations in a Telegram post, criticizing Musk's actions as "unmanly." What Happened: Kadyrov, who has governed Chechnya since 2007, claimed the modified Cybertruck, equipped with a machine gun, was intended for use in the war against Ukraine. "Elon Musk behaved badly. He gives expensive gifts from the heart, and then turns them off remotely," Kadyrov wrote . He also noted in the post that he had to tow the vehicle after it was disabled. While Kadyrov asserted that Musk had personally gifted him the Cybertruck, Musk has categorically denied the claim. The mystery surrounding how Kadyrov obtained the vehicle is heightened by the fact that US sanctions prohibit direct export of the Cybertruck to Chechnya. Earlier in August, Kadyrov had publicly showcased the vehicle, calling it a "Cyberbeast" and praising its technology . Also Read: Putin Pal? Elon Musk Fires Back At Critics Accusing Him Of Supporting Russia Experts have voiced skepticism about the utility of the Cybertruck in combat scenarios. Mark Cancian , a senior advisor with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the vehicle would be "totally useless" on the battlefield due to its weight and charging requirements. Despite Kadyrov's assertions of the truck's combat readiness, analysts doubt its practicality in war zones. This incident highlights broader concerns regarding Tesla's vehicle security and the potential misuse of its products in conflict areas. The ability to remotely disable vehicles could raise questions about the implications for international security and Tesla's reputation as a global brand. The Richmond Battlefield is preparing for a festive celebration. Father Christmas will make his annual appearance. On Sunday, December 1, children and families can meet the beloved “Jolly Ol’ Elf” from 2 PM to 4 PM at the Pleasant View House, 1564 Battlefield Memorial Highway, just south of Richmond. The historical Pleasant View House, built around 1825, is significant. It was owned by the Barnett family and later the Kavanaugh Armstrong family during the Battle of Richmond in 1862. This year, Santa is embracing the spirit of tradition by sporting one of his classic outfits during his visit to the historic site of the Battle of Richmond. While his loyal elves and reindeer are busy preparing for Christmas Eve, Santa will be spreading holiday cheer and creating memorable moments for local families. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras to capture the magic of the occasion, making it a perfect opportunity for festive family photos or holiday cards. After visiting with Santa, families can enjoy refreshments provided by the dedicated volunteers of the Battle of Richmond. Although there is no fee to meet Santa, attendees are strongly encouraged to contribute to a goodwill initiative by bringing bundles of new, pre-packaged socks. These donations will support the upcoming 2024 Santa Claus Sock Drop, running from December 2nd through December 18th. Men’s, women’s, and children’s socks are needed, with a preference for thicker athletic varieties; please refrain from donating dress socks, no-shows, or footies. Donations can be dropped off at the Battle of Richmond Visitors Center at 101 Battlefield Memorial Highway during business hours, from 10 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. For those needing to donate after hours, there is a convenient drop-off location on the front porch. The sock drive, which began in 2014 and was formerly called Project Warm Feet, has successfully collected over 25,000 pairs of socks to aid the homeless and less fortunate in the Richmond, Berea, and Madison County areas. Collected socks will be distributed to various organizations and local law enforcement agencies for emergencies. For further information about Santa’s visit or other events at the Battle of Richmond, please contact the Battle of Richmond Visitor Center at 859-624-0013 during regular hours.

Donald Trump has threatened to seize the Panama Canal, revived calls to buy Greenland and joked about annexing Canada -- leaving the world guessing once again whether he is serious or not. By challenging the sovereignty of some of Washington's closest allies four weeks before he even returns to the Oval Office, the US-president elect has underscored his credentials as global disruptor-in-chief. His comments have renewed fears from his first term that Trump will end up being harsher on US friends than he is on adversaries like Russia and China. But there are also suspicions that billionaire tycoon Trump is looking for leverage as part of the "art of the deal" -- and that the former reality television star is grabbing headlines to look strong at home and abroad. "It's hard to tell how much of this he really wants, and how much is the latest soundbite that will be heard around the world," said Frank Sesno, a professor at George Washington University and former White House correspondent. "He puts other leaders in position of having to figure out what is literal and what is not," he told AFP. The idea of buying Greenland is not a new one for Trump. He also raised the prospect of purchasing the vast strategic island, a Danish territory, during his first term in office. He revived his push over the weekend when naming his ambassador to Copenhagen, saying the "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" for US national security. But he received the same answer this time as he did then, with Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede saying on Monday that the resource-rich island was "not for sale." Yet his most headline-grabbing remarks have been on Panama, as he slammed what he called unfair fees for US ships passing through and threatened to demand control of the Panama Canal be returned to Washington. Trump said on Sunday that if Panama did not agree "then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America -- in full, quickly and without question." He also hinted at China's growing influence around the canal, which was built by the United States in 1914 to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It was returned to Panama under a 1977 deal. Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino dismissed Trump's threats, saying that "every square meter" of the canal would remain in Panamanian hands. Trump responded on TruthSocial: "We'll see about that!" Trump also teased neighboring Canada last week that it would be a "great idea" to become the 51st US state -- but against a dark backdrop of threatened tariffs. Sesno said it was hard for other countries to know how to deal with Trump's comments. "Well, it's clearly a joke. Or is it? said Sesno. "Imagine if you're the President of Panama, how do you react to something like that? You can't ignore it and your country will not let you. So the ripple effect of these comments is extraordinary." Trump's harsh treatment of US allies also stands in stark contrast to his repeated praise for the leaders of US foes -- including Russia's Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine in 2022 in a bid for a land-grab. But there is still likely to be method behind Trump's rhetoric. "Maybe the message is for China" when Trump talks about buying Greenland, said Stephanie Pezard, senior political scientist with the Rand Corporation. Just as Trump expressed concern about Beijing's influence in Panama, China's growing presence in the Arctic and its ties with Russia were "something that the US is really worried about," Pezard told AFP. But there could also be a signal to Denmark that 'If you're too friendly with China, you'll find us in your way" -- even though Denmark and Greenland had been "very good NATO allies." And perhaps Trump knows the reality. Any US plan to "buy" Greenland would be unfeasible "not just in international law but more broadly in the global order that the US has been trying to uphold," she said. dk/bgsfishing logo design

(“Align”), the American Dental Association (“ADA”), and the American Association of Orthodontists (“AAO”). The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of California, alleges that the Defendants engaged in a multi-year coordinated and illegal conspiracy to eliminate their most serious market competitor to protect their industry dominance at the expense of consumers’ ability to access effective, affordable, and proven orthodontic care. This lawsuit arises from evidence described in the complaint that the Defendants colluded to drive SmileDirectClub, a leading provider of affordable and effective telehealth-based orthodontic solutions, out of business. Align initially invested tens of millions of dollars in SmileDirectClub and supported its business model as an investor, board member, lender, and manufacturer. All that changed, however, after SmileDirectClub rejected Align’s proposed buyout bid and an arbitrator later forced Align out of the company entirely for improperly using its access to confidential and proprietary SmileDirectClub information to try to copy SmileDirectClub’s business. The complaint explains how Align, no longer able to profit off of SmileDirectClub’s growth, turned to colluding with the ADA and AAO on a years-long campaign to destroy SmileDirectClub. Despite SmileDirectClub’s high customer satisfaction ratings and proven track record of offering effective care, the Defendants’ coordinated actions described in the complaint ultimately required the company to cease operations, resulting in fewer choices and higher costs for consumers. Evidence Of Anti-Competitive Behavior SmileDirectClub’s innovative model disrupted the orthodontic industry and threatened the financial interests of the Defendants by offering affordable, effective, and accessible clear aligner treatment, with clinical supervision and approval by state-licensed dentists and orthodontists on a fully remote basis, thereby doing away with the need for in-office visits and eliminating key barriers of cost and geography for millions of consumers. As detailed in the complaint, Align was initially attracted to this new model, investing $59.5 million for a 19% ownership stake in SmileDirectClub and becoming the company’s exclusive third-party supplier of clear aligners. This partnership granted Align extensive access to SmileDirectClub’s confidential business information, as well as a seat on its board of directors. But as the lawsuit explains, after SmileDirectClub rejected Align’s $1.5 billion buyout offer, Align instead used the confidential information it had learned from SmileDirectClub and opened a series of copycat “Scan Shops” modeled directly on SmileDirectClub’s innovative SmileShops. SmileDirectClub brought an arbitration against Align because of Align’s violation of the restrictive covenants it had previously agreed to, and the arbitrator ruled in SmileDirectClub’s favor in early 2019. The ruling ordered Align to divest its stake in SmileDirectClub at a steep discount, costing Align hundreds of millions of dollars. The arbitrator also enjoined Align from opening competing stores until August 2022. At this point, the complaint alleges that Align pivoted and launched its new strategy to eliminate SmileDirectClub as a competitor and secure a monopoly in the clear aligner market. The complaint details allegations as to how Align worked in concert with the ADA and AAO to spread false and misleading claims about SmileDirectClub’s safety and efficacy to damage its reputation with consumers and industry professionals, filed baseless complaints with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and leveraged exclusive agreements with dental support organizations - while also interfering with other third-party relationships - to block SmileDirectClub from accessing vital market opportunities. According to the lawsuit, these actions represented a calculated and coordinated effort by the Defendants to stifle competition and innovation in orthodontic care as part of their conspiracy to monopolize the industry and prevent consumers from accessing additional proven treatment options at more affordable prices. The lawsuit also shows how these actions directly contradicted the positions two of the conspirators—Align and the ADA—had taken up until the point when Align’s efforts to buy or copy SmileDirectClub failed. As the lawsuit explains, prior to embarking on the conspiracy, Align’s own CEO had forcefully debunked the exact same false assertions about SmileDirectClub’s services that Align and its coconspirators would repeatedly promote once Align shifted from trying to copy or buy SmileDirectClub to trying to destroy it. Similarly, as the lawsuit shows, the ADA expressly supported and endorsed “asynchronous” teledentistry (i.e., dentists treating patients without having to meet with them live) for years, only to reverse course right when it began conspiring with Align to falsely denigrate SmileDirectClub’s business model. Consumer Impact The alleged actions of Align, the ADA, and the AAO significantly reduced competition, requiring consumers to pay higher prices for orthodontic treatment while limiting their access to proven and less expensive alternative solutions. Before its bankruptcy, SmileDirectClub provided millions of consumers with an affordable and effective telehealth solution for clear aligner treatment, receiving high customer satisfaction ratings and helping those who used the company’s products achieve successful outcomes. Despite its effectiveness and proven product quality, the filing explains that SmileDirectClub was forced into bankruptcy and ceased operations in 2023 as a result of the Defendants’ systematic anticompetitive actions. The Plaintiff in this case, CDS Litigation, LLC, has the right to pursue litigation claims held by SmileDirectClub against the Defendants. ADA/AAO Involvement The filing describes the pivotal roles the ADA and the AAO played in the conspiracy to destroy SmileDirectClub, leveraging their positions as influential trade associations and active market participants to shield giant sponsors - like Align - and block disruption in the industry. The complaint alleges that the ADA and AAO participated in this monopolistic conspiracy by using their position as both market participants and powerful trade associations to preserve the profits and dominance of entrenched industry leaders and ensure that disruptive innovations – like SmileDirectClub’s affordable and accessible care model – could not succeed. About Susman Godfrey The lawsuit is being led by the team at Susman Godfrey that secured a $787.5 million settlement on behalf of Dominion Voting Systems in its defamation case against Fox News. “The filing alleges that Align Technology abused its market dominance to systematically crush competition and protect its monopoly at the expense of consumers,” said Stephen Shackelford, Partner at Susman Godfrey LLP . “According to the complaint, after Align was forced to give up its ownership interest in SmileDirectClub, it suddenly changed its tune as to SmileDirectClub’s model and conspired with the ADA and AAO to spread falsehoods, disrupt SmileDirectClub’s business relationships, and block its access to essential equipment and partnerships. Align’s conduct alleged in the complaint was anticompetitive, calculated, and illegal. The allegations in the complaint show how the entrenched and powerful incumbents in Big Dentistry manipulated the system to collude against a revolutionary and otherwise successful competitor, restrict affordable and effective options for consumers, and inflict lasting reputational damage through their dissemination of demonstrably false claims.” “As explained in the complaint, the Defendants didn’t just target their main competitor - they targeted the millions of consumers who stood to benefit from the affordable and accessible orthodontic care the competitor offered. The effectiveness of SmileDirectClub’s model and products threatened the Defendants’ market and financial interests, who, according to the filing, conspired to destroy the company rather than compete with them fairly,” said Davida Brook, Partner at Susman Godfrey LLP . “This complaint presents a textbook example of how dominant players collude to maintain market power, stifle competition, and harm consumers.” Susman Godfrey LLP is a leading national trial firm with an unmatched track record in high-stakes litigation. The firm has earned recognition as a fearless advocate for fairness, representing clients seeking justice against entrenched industry leaders. About Benesch Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff joins Susman Godfrey as co-counsel and is being led by a team that has extensive experience representing SmileDirectClub. “Having previously litigated and won against Align, we are all too familiar with the sort of abusive anticompetitive acts alleged in the Complaint against Align and other dominant players in the traditional dental market. SmileDirectClub pioneered the use of teledentistry to advance oral care with over 2 million satisfied customers, and the Complaint details the astonishing tactics the Defendants devised to run SmileDirectClub out of business,” said David Rammelt, a Partner at Benesch and Co-Chair of its Litigation Group. Benesch’s award-winning Litigation Practice Group has secured multibillion-dollar wins for plaintiffs and defendants in precedent-setting cases. An Am Law 200 firm, Benesch is nationally recognized by Chambers USA, Benchmark Litigation, and Best Law Firms “Best Lawyers” for earning a place of distinction representing mid-size to Fortune 100 companies in high-stakes litigation and jury trials across the country. HOUSTON — Houston Texans receiver Tank Dell will miss the remainder of the season after dislocating a knee and tearing an ACL in a loss to Kansas City on Saturday. Coach DeMeco Ryans revealed the details of his injury Monday before announcing that Dell would have season-ending surgery for a second straight year. He fractured his fibula in Week 13 against the Broncos as a rookie last season and had surgery on it the following day. “He dislocated the knee, he tore the ACL, other things there he’ll have to get repaired," Ryans said. “So he’ll be out for the year.” Ryans didn't have a date for Dell's surgery for this injury, but said it would be soon. Dell was injured on a 30-yard touchdown catch in Houston’s 27-19 loss Saturday. He was coming across the back of the end zone and made the spectacular catch on a pass from C.J. Stroud before colliding with Houston teammate Jared Wayne on the way to the ground. Dell immediately grabbed at his knee and Wayne signaled for team trainers, who spent several minutes working on the wide receiver while teammates waited anxiously. Dell was eventually placed on a stretcher and driven in a covered medical cart off the field, and then he was taken to the hospital. He stayed in the hospital overnight before flying back to Houston on Sunday. Stroud, who is so close to Dell that he considers him a brother, cried the entire time the receiver was down on the field and for a while after he was taken away. “It was just not easy for me to sit there and be emotional,” Stroud said Monday. “But it’s something that we all go through in life and it’s easy to be a fake tough guy. It’s easy to go through life acting like everything doesn’t affect you, but deep down we all know we’re going through something.” Some criticized Stroud for crying. But he believes a display of emotion such as that was important to remind people of the human aspect of this game and the toll it can take on players. “It’s good for young men and women out there, kids who are brought up — and I was taught this too as a kid, not from my parents but just from the world, don’t let anybody see you emotional,” he said. “Don’t let anybody see you down and yeah there’s some truth to that in in certain aspects, but there’s also life and I think it was good for people to see me in that light and knowing that there is still a human factor to me and I’m a normal person.” Aaron Rodgers is still contemplating his playing future. The star quarterback knows if he returns to the field, it might be out of hands whether it's with the New York Jets. The 41-year-old Rodgers said last week that he'll take some time after this season, his 20th in the NFL, to determine what he wants to do next. On Monday, he suggested a decision on whether he'll return with the Jets could be made for him the day after the team's regular-season finale. “I think there’s a world where they just say, ‘Hey, thank you, we’re going to go in another direction’ on Jan. 6,” Rodgers said during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “That’s a possibility,” he added. "I think there’s also a possibility we’re going to wait and see who the new staff is.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!WESTFIELD — HVAC manufacturer Mestek Inc. has sued a Chinese company, saying the unrelated Shenzhen Mestek Electronics Co. is using the Mestek name and the Westfield company’s reputation to sell temperature and moisture sensing tools online. Westfield’s Mestek says the fan components it makes are for sale on the Chinese Mestek’s Amazon storefront next to electronic thermometers and sensors made by the Chinese company, according to a federal suit filed this week in the U.S. District Court in Springfield. The Chinese company’s Mestek products are also for sale on Chinese online marketplace Alibaba , on Amazon and elsewhere. Alibaba is based in China, but payment is accepted in U.S. dollars and shipping is available to the states, according to the suit. Westfield’s Mestek also said the fan components it makes are for sale on the Chinese Mestek’s Amazon storefront next to electronic thermometers and sensors made by the Chinese company, according to court papers. The suit includes examples of the Chinese Mestek using the name and similar logo. American Mestek says the Chinese company’s tools used to measure temperature, electricity or moisture are related to the heating, cooling, air handling and system control equipment it makes. Mestek says it’s been using the brand name “Mestek” for 40 years selling and promoting its line of heating, cooling, ventilating, metal forming machinery, architectural products, intelligent boiler controls, computer information systems and services and related products. But its corporate roots go back to1898. The suit says the Westfield Mestek discovered the Chinese company was using the name in October 2024 and later found out the Chinese firm had trademarked a similar logo to its own. Shenzhen Mestek Electronics first filed paperwork to register the trademark in 2017, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The paperwork was renewed in 2022. Neither the Westfield Mestek nor its attorney, Kevin H. Vanderleeden of the Springfield-based intellectual property and patent firm Grogan, Truccillo & Vanderleeden. responded to calls for comment Thursday. The Chinese company didn’t respond to emails and has not filed a response to the suit, according to the docket. Suits like this one meant to protect an American company’s intellectual property from Chinese interlopers have become increasingly common, according to a 2023 piece in MIT Technology Review. The suits are also lucrative for the U.S. law firms to file them and collect damages. Stories by Jim Kinney

We’re still a couple of weeks away from the start of the new year at this point, but already 2025 has a ton of highly anticipated, top-tier to look forward to — from the return of old favorites to the debut of major new releases. In this post, we’re taking a look at some of the biggest shows worth already getting excited about, series that include brand new Netflix originals like and , as well as new seasons of some of the biggest streaming TV titles of the past several years. 2025 is going to be a great year for TV. Let’s dive in. (Netflix, Jan. 9) Ready for a darker version of ? Directed by Peter Berg, this six-episode limited series about the 19th-century American West is set in 1857 and stars Taylor Kitsch as a man struggling to overcome his demons. Netflix explains: “Up is down, pain is everywhere, and innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival. “ is a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land.” Sign up for the most interesting tech & entertainment news out there. By signing up, I agree to the and have reviewed the : Season 2 (Apple TV+, Jan. 17) This dystopian workplace drama from Ben Stiller remains one of the best TV shows that Apple TV+ has ever released. In the show, Adam Scott stars as Mark Scout — the leader of a team of Lumon employees who’ve undergone a “severance” procedure, surgically dividing the memories of their work and personal lives. It’s a daring and dangerous experiment in work-life balance that gets called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery, and in Season 2, the stakes are raised even higher. Apple has cryptically teased that Mark and his friends will learn the consequences of trifling with the severance barrier that separates their two selves. : Season 3 (HBO, Feb. 2025) The luxury hotel chain depicted in this popular HBO series from Mike White will expand its fictional footprint to Thailand for the third season of , following the hotel welcoming guests to Hawaii and Sicily in Seasons 1 and 2. From HBO: “ is a sharp social satire following the exploits of various employees and guests at an exclusive Thai resort over one highly transformative week. As darker dynamics emerge with each passing day, the series gradually reveals the complex truths of the seemingly picture-perfect travelers, cheerful hotel employees, and idyllic locale itself.” (Netflix, Feb. 20) Among the high-profile Netflix TV shows that I’m already excited about for 2025 is this Netflix release, starring Robert De Niro in his first-ever TV role. In , from former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim and prolific Netflix creator Eric Newman, De Niro plays a former US President who heads up a group called the Zero Day Commission. As the leader of that group, he’s charged with getting to the bottom of a major cyberattack that’s led to thousands of deaths and widespread chaos. As power brokers on Wall Street and in government and technology circles collide, disinformation runs wild — making this a show about finding truth in a world torn apart by crisis. (Netflix, March 20) Speaking of TV shows about US Presidents, this next Netflix release is set inside their famous home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Netflix’s newest Shondaland release involves a murder during a state dinner, with Uzo Aduba’s female Benoit Blanc, detective Cordelia Cupp, investigating the crime. Shondaland releases tend to be some of the buzziest and borderline trashiest of all Netflix releases, which is to say this one should be quite a ride, indeed. (Disney+, April 22) I’ve previously described Andor, the live-action Star Wars spinoff about a rebel spy’s origin story, as streaming TV shows of the decade. Certainly, it’s the best of all of the many Star Wars TV shows, which have quite a sketchy record when it comes to living up to the storytelling promise of the galaxy far, far away. Season 2 of will finish linking up this prequel story with that 2016 movie from Gareth Edwards, completing the journey of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) from scoundrel to heroic spy. : Season 5 (Netflix, TBA) Turning again to a returning favorite, it’s time to say goodbye to one of Netflix’s biggest shows of all time — the hit Duffer brothers series that launched Millie Bobby Brown and gave us a classic coming-of-age sci-fi drama for the ages. The fifth and final season of the show will be one of the few domestic Netflix originals to rival the scale of Squid Game, Netflix’s biggest hit of all time. Filming has reportedly just wrapped on the new season, which will hopefully let the show’s core group of friends who are now entering adulthood finally get to the bottom of the Upside Down. : Season 3 (Netflix, TBA) Few Netflix TV shows, in my humble opinion, do jaw-dropping finales quite like , the political thriller starring Keri Russell as an ambassador who also kind of acts like a co-CIA station chief. Season 2 offered viewers quite a head-spinning, twist-filled ride, building up to that reveal that the US Vice President (played by Allison Janney) is actually the one who engineered the attack we thought was the brainchild of the skeezy UK prime minister. And , the US president gets some distressing news and dies on the spot, and the season ends as agents are racing to Janney’s Veep presumably to tell her the news and get her secure. Will she make Russell’s Kate Wyler her new VP? I kind of hope not, but regardless it’s already clear that 2025 will be the year of political scandal and intrigue — both the fictional and real-life kinds. : Season 2 (Netflix, TBA) Another of Netflix’s biggest TV shows of all time, is a supernatural coming-of-age series that follows Wednesday Addams as she navigates life at Nevermore Academy, honing her psychic abilities and solving a chilling murder mystery tied to her family’s past. The hit series blends dark humor, mystery, and teen drama, while exploring themes of identity, friendship, and embracing one’s unique quirks. : Season 2 (Peacock, TBA) One of the most acclaimed original TV shows that Peacock has released to date, creator Rian Johnson’s Emmy-nominated series starring Natasha Lyonne is a throwback to classic “case-of-the-week” mystery series. The star-studded drama gives Lyonne’s Charlie Cale, a gifted private eye who has a knack for being able to tell when someone is lying, the opportunity to put her skill to the test in order to solve all sorts of capers. The show is one of the most well-written and entertaining Peacock originals, and Season 2 will include a slew of guests like John Mulaney, Kumail Nanjiani, Awkwafina, Katie Holmes, and Margo Martindale. spinoff (Peacock, TBA) NBC’s nine-season mockumentary , about the misadventures of office denizens who work for a paper supply company, is one of the greatest TV comedies of all time. Peacock is preparing to release a ... spinoff, is that the word we’re using? It’s a little unclear, but the new series is nominally set in the Dunder Mifflin-verse, only this time the action will take place at a local newspaper office. So I guess there’s a world where the spinoff could still give us an update to the “people person’s paper people” jingle. : Season 4 (summer 2025) For fans of FX’s hit series starring Jeremy Allen White as the brilliant yet tortured chef Carmy Berzatto, the summer of 2025 can’t get here soon enough. We’ve got questions needing answers, like: What the hell did that review Carmy has been waiting on really say? And is Sydney really going to go through with it, striking out on her own? Like Thomas Keller explained to Carmy in that beautiful scene from Season 1, has always been the product of a lot of small things done well. And I can’t wait to see what’s next for this crew of earnest strivers we’ve come to know and love over three seasons of some of the best TV in years.

In conclusion, the implementation of tax benefits for homebuyers has proven to be a valuable tool in promoting the growth of the real estate market and supporting economic recovery. By incentivizing property purchases, governments can stimulate demand, boost property sales, and fuel economic growth. As we navigate through evolving market trends and economic challenges, the effectiveness of tax incentives for homebuyers in reviving the housing sector serves as a testament to the power of strategic policy interventions in shaping a resilient and dynamic real estate market.SAO PAULO (AP) — Police have formally accused Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others of attempting a coup to keep the right-wing leader in office after his electoral defeat in 2022. Their allegations threaten to torpedo Bolsonaro's hopes of returning to politics. Brazil’s Supreme Court said Friday that police findings were delivered to Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who next week will relay them to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet. He will decide whether to formally charge Bolsonaro or toss the investigation. Bolsonaro told the news website Metropoles on Thursday that he is waiting for his lawyer to review the police report, which is reportedly about 700 pages long, but that he would fight the case. He dismissed the investigation as the result of “creativity.” The former president denies that he tried to stay in office after his narrow electoral defeat in 2022 to leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has since faced a series of legal threats. That police are seeking formal charges indicates the investigation found evidence of “a crime and its author,” and it is likely there are legal grounds for the prosecutor-general to file charges, said Eloísa Machado de Almeida, a law professor at Getulio Vargas Foundation, a university in Sao Paulo. On Friday, the attorney for Bolsonaro’s former right hand, Lt. Col. Mauro Cid, said in a live television interview that his client had informed the Supreme Court that Bolsonaro was aware of the coup plot. “The then-president knew it all. Actually, he led this organization,” Cid’s attorney, Cezar Bitencourt, told network GloboNews. Just minutes later, Bitencourt partially retracted his statement. "I didn’t say Bolsonaro knew it all. ‘All’ is a lot. He was evidently aware of some things.” Police said the Supreme Court agreed to the release all 37 names in the police report “to avoid the dissemination of incorrect news.” Among them are dozens of former and current Bolsonaro aides, including: Gen. Walter Braga Netto, who was his running mate in the 2022 campaign; former Army commander Gen. Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira; Valdemar Costa Neto, the chairman of Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party; and his veteran former adviser, Gen. Augusto Heleno. Braga Netto’s lawyers said they would wait to formally receive the police documents before making any comments. The retired general shared their statement on X late Thursday. Bolsonaro is already accused separately of smuggling diamond jewelry into Brazil and directing Lt. Col. Cid to falsify his and others’ COVID-19 vaccination statuses. Bolsonaro has denied those charges. Another probe found he abused his authority by casting doubt on Brazil's electoral system, and judges on the top electoral court barred him from running again until 2030. Still, he insists he will run in 2026, and many in his orbit were heartened by President-elect Donald Trump's recent election win despite his swirling legal troubles. Local media report that Gonet is already under pressure to move forward with multiple investigations against the former president, and politicians say if the 69-year-old Bolsonaro does stand trial his allies and rivals will race to seize his influence with voters. “Bolsonaro is no longer the sole leader of the right-wing. He is coming out of mayoral elections in which most of his candidates lost. All these probes don’t help him at all,” said Carlos Melo, a political science professor at Insper, a university in Sao Paulo. “The governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, the radical candidate for Sao Paulo mayorship Pablo Marçal, the governor of Goias state, Ronaldo Caiado ... There are politicians lining up to court Bolsonaro voters,” Melo said. Creomar de Souza, a political analyst of Dharma Political Risk and Strategy, said the formal accusation is “obviously bad” for Bolsonaro, but that it might not impede him if he does decide to run for office again. “This could give those targeted a chance to portray themselves as being persecuted,” de Souza said, adding that could benefit them. Bolsonaro's allies in Congress have been negotiating a bill to pardon individuals who stormed the Brazilian capital and rioted on Jan. 8, 2023, in an attempt to keep the former president in power. Analysts have speculated that lawmakers want to extend the legislation to cover the former president himself. However, efforts to push a broad amnesty bill would be “politically challenging” in light of the new allegations against Bolsonaro and others, Machado said. On Tuesday, Federal Police arrested four military and a Federal Police officer, accused of plotting to assassinate Lula and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes in an effort to overthrow the government following the 2022 elections. Last week, a man tried to enter the Supreme Court in the capital Brasilia with explosives but was blocked by guards. He threw the explosives outside the building , killing himself.
